'Beauty and the Beast' is the adaptation of a story by Madame de Villeneuve. Published anonymously in 1740, it paints a portrait of Belle, a young girl full of joy who falls in love with The Beast, a cursed creature in search of love and redemption. In 1760, a condensed children's version was published, and it was from this version that Jean Cocteau and then Walt Disney drew their famous adaptations. Overshadowed, the original version has never been adapted for the screen. Until now. (TMDb)

It's a gorgeous movie, to be sure, and I liked the unique take on the Beast's backstory, but the central relationship falls completely flat - I never bought that these two characters even liked each other, let alone would fall in love. Still worth a watch, though, and it's certainly more engaging than Disney's bland live-action remake.

I think everybody are being overly harsh on this one. Okay, so it measures up to neither Cocteau's version nor to Disney's. Sure, the ending is problematic. And yes, the central love story needed a some more work. Yeah, a lot more. But it's a fairy tale, people - so lighten up, huh? Also, some less than impressive CG aside, the production value is generally high, and the expanded version of the story legitimizes a remake, I would say. So, all in all, neither beastly nor beautiful. A fair effort.

Definitely like this version quite a bit. A lot of CGI but I never really minded it. Mostly like that it wasn't a musical

Better than the Disney remake, and some creativity is shown. The chemistry between Belle and the Beast is nowhere to be found however, and the CGI ugly dog beasts are crap. The dub has bad voices too, I should have picked the original in french instead

A movie with good visuals, and some interesting characters and subplots. But, it completely stumbles with the relationship between Belle and the Beast. You never buy the relationship, or her falling in love with him. The subplots and other character relationships, along with the movie's particular telling of certain events of the story, mean I still enjoy the movie a fair amount, but I have to admit it does a poor job with what should be the core of the movie.

Marvellous version of a classic fairy tale. Visually sumptuous. Told for adults as well as children. My only real criticism is the rather Disney-style animation for the dog-creatures that inhabit the Beast's castle. EJ40, IF38

It's an uphill battle telling a story that's been adapted by the Disney establishment. One that is made doubly challenging when it's an iconic film from the renaissance era, even when your story is truer to the source material. That said, La Belle et la Bête provides a wonderful feast for the eyes, with luscious costumes, grand sets and effects that seem a little Hollywood. A shame this all comes at the expense of solid characters that lack any chemistry, much to the detriment of the film.

Tales of the unknown by anyone, although very different, and an adaptation of the original. The people of the whole world, for two hours and a guest are under the influence must be watched movies. Bad or mediocre movie that I have not come across Vincent Cassel', relying on e I was again misled me.

Eu gosto do Christophe Gans nos contos de fadas de O Pacto dos Lobos, mas essa versão de A Bela e a Fera vindo do país que nos deu a imbatível versão de Cocteau chega a soar como heresia. TV aberta.

It has lovely visuals, and creative ideas, but overall it's weird, creepy, and doesn't make sense. The story is full of plot holes, and the characters' behavior and motivations are inconsistent and absolutely baffling. This is the version people should point to when they talk about "Stockholm syndrome." There is no interaction between the two "leads" that even approach a healthy or romantic relationship, the prince..? king? is beyond Edward Cullen levels of creepy.

I'm not saying that this should have gone full-on Jeunet or anything, but what I thought this lacked most was something to distinguish it as being French. Except for the language this felt no different than any of the other live action versions of fairytales that Disney and other have been gracing us with for the last couple of years. But with worse CGI. Not bad, but should have been something more.

Gans has some flair for movement and opulence, but the drama is lumbering and overripe, and the CGI mostly ugly.

As a big fan of Gothic horror, I really wanted to like this. Unfortunately, it reminded me of (post-90's) Tim Burton: beautiful images, but relying too much on CGI and looking very artificial. It also lacked heart which is crucial for the story. Hard to see who was the target audience: it's too scary for children and too silly for adults. Missed opportunity. Director's earlier Brotherhood of the Wolf was a lot better even if it shared some of the same problems.

"La Belle et la Bête" deserves credit for the changes made to try and distinguish itself from the multitude of other adaptations of the fairy tale, but it fails to do so coherently, or with desperately needed character motivation.
