I had a smile on my face about...5% of the time. It was like a pale Xerox of the first one. They tried to recreate the magic of the musical possession scene, but missed it by a mile. Felt like a Netflix streaming sequel used to make the original more valuable in a package deal. Still, I didn't hate it. It wasn't as bad as the "Beetlejuice's Graveyard Revue" at Universal Studios. We walked out of that one.

Oldschool Burton grotesqueries, silly gags, imaginative practical effects, a game cast, an oomty-oomty Elfman score, all wrapped in a sense of joyous lightheartedness, with credits rolling 90 minutes after the Warner Brothers logo faded up... Sure, call it nostalgia-bait, but for me, it's mostly in the sense, that I miss a time, where this type of silly, fun movie was more the norm, than a rare curiosity.

A randomly generated, haphazard regurgitation of all the brilliant little ideas of the original masterpiece that was Beetlejuice just doesn't cut it when the underlying creativity and narrative cohesion is absent. The writers of this travesty should be hanged for pulverizing my childhood so thoroughly. And while it is nice to see Keaton, Ryder and O'Hara again, Ortega is a vapid and utterly charmless actress, and De Vito cameos for only about two seconds.

Despite some effort to weave half-assed plots and a good cast it fails to build new lore. It goes through the motions of the first film revisiting everything popular safely. Hope this is the one they will let it R.I.P.

It's usually an ignorant and presumptive exercise to hypothesize what parts of a film a director cared more about than others, but there's a pretty jarring divide here between the kooky delirium of the after-life sequences and the dull, plodding, legacyquel shuffleboard happening up on the surface. It's hard not to imagine Burton "yeah-yeahing" the bare bones family drama and expository character catch-up while really sinking his teeth into the more comically macabre set-pieces.

tim burton has come a long way since 1988. which makes it all the more puzzling why he continually throws everything over board to put out an unfocused and messy memberberry theme-park, based on a movie that wasn't exactly his magnum opus to begin with. was it to elaborate on a story no one gave a shit about for 30+ years? or to shill jenna ortega as this generation's winona ryder? i mean...even winona ryder wasn't her generation's winona ryder. "WHY?" is all i'm asking here.

Feels like there’s almost three movies jammed in here. I’m a late period Burton defender so this isn’t a HES FUCKING BACK moment for me, but it is one of his better late period movies.

I had fun. I don't think Burton should make movies anymore, and I don't really care for Jenna Ortega's character, however I'm moved by Lydia and her relationship with her step-mother. They both give so much in so few scenes, it's quite brilliant. Sadly, the plot is a mess, and I wish the style was more in line with the original one, as this one feels... a bit bland sometimes.

I was quite concerned during the first 15 minutes or so, but the film comes around pretty well and becomes a fairly fun, less cynical/cash grabby than normal sequel 40 years after the first. It mixes the new with the old pretty well, but obviously isn't nearly as inventive as the first since it was all invented already. Dafoe is great in every scene he's in and Keaton is as motivated as ever. Great sets and effects. An enjoyable watch that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Too much going on - Bellucci and Dafoe (as much as I like him) didn't need to be in the movie at all. I laughed a bit, mostly with Keaton (who I think is the only part of the film that still works), but the tone and humor of most of the movie fell flat with me. I think the writing was bad, which lead to a lot of the acting feeling bad as well. They tried to re-create the dinner table scene at the wedding, but the song went on way too long with little impact. Complete miss for me.

Messy. Most of it is way too wacky for me, particularly the titular character, but I sort of enjoyed Ryder, Bellucci and the Jeremy/Arthur Conti plot strand.

I'm torn. I absolutely loved seeing my goth childhood crush all grown up, and Keaton is amazing as always. And obviously the set design and practical effects were nice as the original. But the b and c plot were just.... meh. I also feel like Ortega has already become typecast and I'm getting kinda bored of her.

Campy Burton is back! Ultimately a pretty overdone movie. It feels like they threw in all of the ideas they had instead of exclusively the ones that make sense for the plot. It definitely has way too many characters too. Thankfully, after a rocky first act, the movie is just a total blast. The tone and visuals pretty closely match the original, and I really like how they expanded the lore of the afterlife. The entire cast crushes it, especially Keaton. Imperfect, but still a ton of fun.

I don't have much connection with the original but this was fun all around. Solid performances, visuals, zaniness, darkness. Had some legitimately funny bits, hit the more emotional beats decently. I love Ortega so there's that. Had a good time.

The singing and dancing is once again good, as are Keaton, Ryder, O'Hara, and also Dafoe, but the rest is just noise. If you combine this latest version of Delia Deetz with Monica Belluci as Delores, then you get Marina Abramović, which is more interesting than anything that actually happens in the film. Also, Belluci already really played this type of Delores character in the little seen Australian comedy science-fiction horror film 'Nekrotronic', in which she is the soul sucker Finnegan.

Jenna Ortega is a one-note actress who is also much too old for the role she played here. While the first film was a comedy with a splash of horror this felt more like a spoof with a splash of comedy and the barest hint of horror but none of the charm of the first film. The only reason to even watch this was for Michael Keaton who seemed to be giving it his all.

Fun and forgettable. Not a surfeit of laugh out loud gags, and too many plotlines that resolve all too cleanly. Exists solely as a serviceable sequel that doesn't detract from but also doesn't add to the universe of the original. Nice amount of practical effects but with an obviously higher budget which sacrifices the rough charm of the original. Has some darker moments but without the bravery to lean into them or the genuine anarchic undertones. Can live with and without it.

Je ne pensais pas Tim Burton capable de réaliser un film aussi cool quarante ans après le premier. Son style en berne depuis une décennie, et Jenna Ortega sur le marché, pouvaient faire craindre le pire en matière de résurrection foireuse. Visiblement je me suis trompé.

Meh. The movie recycles a lot from the original Beetlejuice, and some of it is really forced: a quire singing Banana boat at the funeral? Come on! It does manage to keep interest until the final act where it falls apart, misses a few good chances at drama, relying instead on - you guessed it - recycling the old movie. On the bright side, Keaton is in his element as always, and Winona Ryder holds her own. The whole cast is actually pretty good, come to think of it. So it's not a total disaster.

I may come back and edit my score for this movie. I grew up on Beetlejuice. I loved the original, the cartoon series, and I even had some action figures. I loved this movie. I had a goofy smile on my face during the whole experience. It is a great story by itself but, for someone like me, it does so much to reference the original. The music remixes the songs we loved. The acting is fantastic especially Katherine O'Hara. I was happy with how they treated Charles. But why no Otho?

I didn't remember the original so the slow opening act was disappointing (but saved by the pumping soundtrack). O'Hara started out annoying but became funny second half. Ryder and Keaton had great chemistry to the point of me rooting for them to be together at the end. Ortega phoned it in. The plot lines were redundant but I'll accept any excuse to include Dafoe. Glad they didn't have a long drawn out boss battle. Fav scene: Bellucci coming back to life and Keaton finding out.

Somewhere down the line Tim Burton forgot what pacing means. Where the original gave us its hook almost immediately, this movie dances around its mundane boring tropes for an hour before going the most obvious and lamest route possible with it. On some level I want to like this because despite being the current year it still insists on maintaining the visual effects from the 80's and that's charming as hell, but aside from the twist ending I can't think of any high points in this flick.

Some decent parts and Keaton slips right back into his role but as with Frozen Empire it's a cluttered mess and the part that works best is the still the OG characters. Except Rider, who's got barely any of Lydia's fire left in her, thanks mostly to her horrific daughter played by Jenna Ortega. Don't pay full price to see this one.

Solid sequel. It takes a while to hit its stride, but the latter half showcases Tim Burton's best work in years. The screen time is well-balanced between old and new cast. Keaton brings the same energy as before, and Dafoe appears to be having a blast. I liked how the FX and set designs kept the original's aesthetic. The weakest link is the disjointed story which is disappointing considering they had ~35 years to improve it. Bonus points for the nods to Mario Bava and keeping the runtime short.

I do believe that comparison can be the thief of joy, so I did endeavor to do my best not to compare this to its predecessor too much. In saying so, I do think it stands comfortably alongside it! The filmmakers didn't set out to reinvent this wheel; they wanted to make a solid, super-fun, entertaining Beetlejuice movie and they did exactly that. It looked good, it felt good. Shout-out to Bob for cinema's most heartbreaking death of 2024. If this is the quality of the product, give me a third.

Probably as good as it could possibly be. Surprised how much of the story is motivated by needing to write out Jeffrey Jones. Decent gags, great effects. This is half welcome return of what is lovable about Burton & Keaton and half perfunctory callbacks and hugging-and-learning.

it's crazy that catharine played her mom back then and now she looks better than her lool and she was the best/most consistent character/part of the movie. monica had a chance but went nowhere and ended as a unnecessary distraction. jenna got better as it went on but the romance was too contrived and quick. keaton was okay/up and down then got good. bad song choices mainly the wedding lip syncing one. i wish they went with them as a married couple terrorizing lol still hope for 3

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Big fan of the original so I think it'll mostly be a hit for those of us with longer leashes for the outright silliness of this franchise. Could have used more Bellucci. Somewhat less accessible for my friends with photosensitivity. Lots of flashing lights in this one. Be warned. I did a lot of squinting. Still, a triumphant return. 7.4

It doesn’t rebottle the lighting of the original, merely some sparks. Beetlejuice himself is the highlight and works wonderfully even if his screentime is limited. The human world drama is boring. Overall the story is unfocused and tries to have several protagonists that should have been cameo roles. When Burton wips out the practical effects, the film is elevated.

By and large, this nails the original's energy and the fun, harping on nostalgic throwbacks for the masses while simultaneously trying new bits. The family drama is the thinnest part of the plot, but Ortega, Ryder, and O'Hara are each engaging in their own right, and the film's pacing is brisk, so I can't say this ever gets stale. It seems like everyone had fun making this, especially Keaton and Dafoe, and while it doesn't get weird enough, I still laughed a lot.
