Before I Hang

Enjoyable performance by Karloff in a typical Jekyll and Hyde story, with some medical ethics moralizing. Fav scene: being a jerk to piano playing guest.

Less going for it cinematically but Karloff's given a plum roll and he runs with it.

Basically the same plot as _The Man They Could Not Hang_, complete with same star and same director... just nowhere nearly as fun. Not at all memorable, either... to the point that, back in the VHS days, I actually rented this a second time, brought it home, and watched some of the titles before I realized I'd seen it before. That was the only time that's ever happened to me, in all my days of voracious moviegoing

I like these Boris Karloff murder pictures and Before I Hang (1940) is another enjoyable effort, though a little too much on the simple side compared to his usual standard. Still some chilling moments with the most gentle killer around.
