A rare thing: a movie that shows you exactly how & why two characters fall in love. Other romances - even some of the good ones - do a montage to music with snippets of the couple walking, laughing, eating, & (at worst) taking pictures in a photo booth. But you never know exactly why they're laughing or what they're saying. This movie is all about the things those movies leave out. Just the conversations (!) between 2 fully developed characters, not stereotypes. So good it all seems real.

A very poor and wildly over-praised movie, filled with false wisdom. I found this very difficult to sit through. That audiences purport to find these characters and their relationship "realistic" is remarkable, and probably means that reality is becoming less realistic. And stupider. Also, see my review of FRIDAY NIGHT (Claire Denis, 2002).

This film got into my blood years before I developed a real taste of cinema. It enhanced in my mind like cancer or for better; yogurt. The main theme seems to be the romance between two young people which is rendered to the bone by Hawke and Delpy. But I believe it is mostly about one's self worth and respect to the series of moments that composes his/herself. Goes best with Waking life, Slacker, Tape and the sequel B. Sunset.

Simply the most down to earth and romantic film I've seen. The thing that makes Before Sunrise so enjoyable is that it is so easy to relate to and to identify with. ... Some of the scenes seem to been taken out of your own life, they don't try to over romanticize it, they make it look real and true, maybe that's why this on got such a big fan base. But also the acting and the background of Vienna help to make this a beautiful movie.

sometime after tonight's painful experience, i fall in love for the first time. we watch films together, and we choose this. and i totally reverse my opinion, cherishing those small, beautiful details the film transposes from our lives. and then i blow my brains out, suddenly realising that my life has become an utterly meaningless series of clichés. before i rewatch, though, i will plant a bomb in ethan hawke's head, timed to explode upon my death, as insurance for irreparable future damages.

I adore this. A fly in the city of Vienna, we observe Jesse and Celine on a romantic date which, like 'Before Sunrise' itself, is cute, straightforward and just about perfect. My attention is always held completely by Hawke and Delpy's back and forth, interesting in its familiar typicalness, and the tangents they take off on are often intellectually invigorating. Linklater remains one of my favorite filmmakers; the guy knows how to write. His script is well-constructed and the ending is clever.

After countless revisits, the magic never fades. It is a collection of little moments that slowly paint the picture of one beautiful night shared. Everything becomes memorable in this capsule of time, even the nameless Austrian locale who show up for fleeting encounters seem to say all the right things. It truly is the purest romance ever committed to film.

Time fly's by when you're with Celine and Jesse cause you're so caught up in their conversations and that's what makes this one of the best written films I've seen. Combined with the long takes with nothing but talk and the streets of Vienna as background it gives you the feeling of being there with them and that's an acomplishment! Agreed that the plot sounds really boring with the guy and the girl walking around during their one night togehter but Linklater, Delpy and Hawke makes it perfect!

Showcases a mutual and reciprocal yet discomfited, romantically down to earth converse never seen before in film. Hawke and Delpy's chemistry remains unrivalled and prevalent to this day. Nobody can even come close to proportionate in the extent of feelings this film displays, not even Before Sunset, its sequel. Moving and beyond sharp-witted.

I have to say that this was exactly what I expected it to be. That's fine, though, because what it is is a really solid, believable story about two realistic, flawed yet likable people. Even better, there are no unnecessary side plots, no superfluous fluff, nothing that distracts the viewer from the focus of the story. It ain't earth-shattering, but it's a very satisfying little flick.

This and its sequel are basically the most romantic movies I think I've ever seen. There's basically no plot except for the two leads walking around town talking, but that ends up being far more touching and realistic than any grand romantic gesture we're used to seeing in movies.

A naturalistic, supremely romantic movie. I appreciate the attempt to avoid cliches and show what a real relationship looks like in its first day. This is the first film I've seen where the "final goodbye" scene is actually sad. I admit, I had huge expectations for this movie based on its reputation. It lived up to them by about 95%. It didn't floor me, but it impressed me and I'm quite glad I watched it. When anyone asks me to recommend a great romantic film, now I have a perfect answer.

This film is beautifully real. The chemistry between these two characters is utterly immersive. A rare gem of a romance, where the writing, direction and performances come together to produce a genuinely enjoyable experience for all. A film so heavily reliant on its dialogue is bound to have moments when it misses, but more often than not it's witty, intelligent, thoughtful banter that - while creeping into pretentiousness - always manages to feel real. The 95 minutes fly past and everything's over all too soon, perfectly reflecting the short time the characters have together.

Warm, wonderful and very romantic film which is effectively a "talk-fest", but Hawke and Delpy's charming performances, and Linklater's subtle but impressive direction, help distinguish it. Perhaps not as insightful as the similar MY DINNER WITH ANDRE, but very successfully captures the spirit of youthful impulsiveness, and convincingly charts Hawke and Delpy's intense, and growing, connection.

The emotions here are utterly raw; when they're awkward, you feel awkward, and when they're romantic, it's hard not to smile. The chemistry is electric and the script is rich and authentic. The movie is all about Jesse and Celine, and as such the parts where they interact with the eccentric locals (the palm reader, the poet, and so on) are the easily the weakest parts of the film.

Maybe if I'd seen this movie in the 90s it would have resonated more. It just feels very of-its-time now. The conversations for the most part veered between pretentious and banal. And Julie Delpy's character was more than a little irritating and unbelievable. Hawke was brilliant though. The recent In Search of a Midnight Kiss does this theme much better.

Funnier and sweeter than I remembered, the chemistry between the two leads carries us through their meandering journey. The intuitive editing strengthens their connection, while images of railroad tracks, bus routes, and rivers all give the sense of them being guided by forces beyond themselves. Linklater's primary achievement here is to bring out the fundamental vulnerability of these two young people, still refreshing in a world full of people deathly afraid of what others might think of them.

This is some off-the-charts chemistry between the two leads right here. It's rare that I've seen such natural and spontaneous acting paired with this level of vibrant, intelligent crafted dialogue. Whilst I remain dubious as to just how many bars, restaurants, cafes & cinematically romantic hotspots two persons are physically able to attend during one night in Vienna, "Before Sunrise" is an undoubtedly beautiful film in many ways. For a romance it's bravely dialogue driven, consisting of no ponderous montages and few awkward screenplay cliches. Personally I felt little or nothing emotionally for the characters, but they were likable and the two leads were supurb. Just love Vienna too.

My first instinct is always to criticize Linklater's pseudo-philosophical musings or his goofy characters... but the truth is that he makes truly affecting films. This one is earnest, smart, poignant, and beautiful, perfectly capturing love, passion, and romance. It unfolds patiently and delicately so you grow with the relationship. Hawke and Delpy deserve credit for having such impossible chemistry, but the film has so much heart and honesty that it's hard to pinpoint where credit is due.

Does Linklater just write down whatever pithy thoughts come into his mind and call it a movie script when he hits 100 pages? The zany palm reader was the most unaffected character in the film. That shouting German couple at the beginning of the movie was easier on the ears than these two wankers. Okay, it does become more tolerable as the movie progresses and we're more able to ignore the idea that these two supposedly just met, and I have to admit I was pretty insufferable in my early 20s too.

I wish they would've casted someone other than Ethan Hawke. I find him utterly repulsive.

I think we all want our romances to look like this while we know full well that they likely will not.

It is difficult to write good, natural dialogue that is interesting. Linklater and his wonderful stars made not one but two films (with companion Before Sunset) filled with top notch dialogue and giving us a relationship that is perfectly developed. Brilliant.

Charming, with pleasing dialogue and a tonne of spectacular locations (so much so it makes the date seem practically impossible). I think the film does a great job of showing how romance is so inextricably intertwined with time and place.

Two strangers meet on a train... and end up having long rambling conversations about love.
I didn't think there was that much chemistry between the actors, and they don't really do much, but talk and talk. So it's a different kind of movie - if you're the kind of person or in the kind of state to ponder about love and all its meaning, some of the conversations and ideas brought up in this movie are great.

This is what all 'romantic' films should be like. There's no montage, there's
no misunderstanding, there aren't any clichés at all. These characters meet, they talk, they walk through Vienna, they kiss, then it ends. You actually watch them fall in love, something you very rarely see in films. I do have a few problems and there are a few bullshit scenes but for the most part, it redeems the Romance genre. Easily manipulated teenage girls and housewives: watch this, not Twilight!

Freedom, youth, serendipity and longing. Classic backpacker romance of paths crossing travelling. Impulsive, lyrical, natural. Must-see. Before Sunset is even more poignant. An accessible but very indie movie, that favours art over predictability. Truly lovely. Linklater brings his Austin, TX sensibility and gentle grace to an intimate, endearing and poignant story.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delply are both wonderful in this one night together in Vienna. Great music, scenery, but also quite a lot of just the two of them sitting together and talking. Who would have thought that would make such a good movie. It was very entertaining to the end with witty and interesting conversations.

Wow, I can't believe it's taken me so long to get around to see this. It's one of the most effective love stories I've ever seen. Does a fantastic job of capturing the feel of a whirlwind romance.

Wonderful exploration of love and romance in modern times, where a simple connection made on a train by chance becomes so much more. I've never wanted a film to end less.

What an endless night. This film should have been finished in 20 minutes. Before Sunrise could be the most overrated film in history. The girl with yellow teeth and a guy with moronic face. And don't forget that horrible scenario. * Casting, Acting : 5
* Script : 1
* Directing, Aura : 5
* Ease of Viewing : 3
* Naked Eye : 3

Watching this movie for the first time in the year 2013 and as a person who more or less has spent her whole live in Vienna, I was quite preoccupied with observing how much the city's changed or where the parts were shot. So maybe that's why I couldn't enjoy the story as much as I wanted to. However, it's quite authentic, missing out on too much cheesiness and features cute dialogues. It's also a must-see for everyone who wants to come to Vienna.

Amazing amazing amazing movie. It is just two people talking and discovering each other, but it is so real and so great. I just cannot believe it was ever made.

At some point in history philosophers started to argue for the existence of a substrata in reality, which would be a mediative reality - a reality through which reality, by man, can be understood, and could be understood through a dialectical process between reality and man. Here, I, for the first time in time, shall argue for the existence of a substrata of magical bullshit, introduced into reality for the first time here, used to keep the unaware viewer transfixed.

Tender, honest and beautiful dialogue. Both being vulnerable and still slightly immature, just makes the conversation more romantic and pure. To Vienna I go..

A very involved and organic love story. They, like us, are hanging on to the emotions of every moment. I wish I watched this without knowing there were sequels. Fav scene: the shared human moment when the bartender gives them a bottle of wine.

So intimate, so thoughtful. Just like the conversations you have with yourself from now and then. This movie makes you forget you're watching a movie.

Interesting and funny at times, but a bit slow more than once. It does have some great long takes, though.

The first time i've watched this masterpiece i remember that i remained astonished by beauty of the dialogues. With literally just two actors the movie is able to capture your attention and never leaves it, not even for a single frame.

"Cleo from 5-7" meets "My Dinner with Andre" People really talk like this? Only in the movies. Ethan Hawke has BDE here (well, a meth pep in general) and Julie Delpy is just too fucking adorable. Could this happen to strangers in 2022 with the creeps we have? As a teen I loved the philosophical musings, same ones which 15+ years later make my eyes roll. Despite its flaws and perhaps unrealistic/unpractical views of love at first sight, its still a cute film. And I like the nontraditional end
