Not quite the instant-classic that Carney's indie-musical ONCE was, but still an undeniably heartwarming and charming little movie...this time with bigger stars including Catherine Keener, Mark Ruffalo and - doing all her own singing - Keira Knightley. It's easy to fall in love with the story that celebrates music and how moments in life can be reflected through song.

I'm pretty sure you have to like the music to like this movie. I'm glad I did. Ruffalo takes the acting above normal romcom levels.

Pleasant to an almost uncomfortable degree. The cast is good without raising eyebrows, the music isn't really my cup of tea yet I can't imagine anyone actively hating it and it's all bundled together in a neat, little package. It's nice. And I do kind of mean that as an insult.

This is one of my favorite movies I've seen in the last few years. Beautiful story & music, and I absolutely love Keira Knightley in this role. Great performances all around, really. Ruffalo, Keener, Levine, Steinfeld, Corden... all pitch perfect. The characters feel real and have wonderful story arcs. My emotions were riding high while watching this. I've rewatched this several times and I love it just as much every time.

Once but with Ruffalo at his best -- he should always act drunk -- and Keira just not convincing at all as this Sharon Van Etten-like singer-songwriter. Actually, the songs suck -- sorry, Gretta, they seem as overproduced as Levine's --, and, despite the overall sense of kindness and artistic authenticity -- oh, they record an album on the streets of NY, oh, they create a band out of the blue, oh, they don't sign with the indie label and sell it for 1 buck --, it all looks too staged.

I liked Once when I saw it, ages ago. I doubt I would like it now, though. Carney tries the same thing again in New York, with famous star-actors and lots of cameos from famous musicians. It's girly movie, and it's lame. I guess it is supposed to be contemporary, but the music from this film could have had a chance 15 years ago; now it is just 'what, what's this garbage I'm hearing? Is it supposed to be a commentary on how music industry is lagging light-ages behind Internet?'.

Begin Again is a mostly secular redemption story, with some really easy to miss nods to a greater Writer. When we first meet them, Dan and Greta are broken beyond all hope of repair. But they, and their music, save each other. And while the film starts off looking pretty bleak, it transforms into a sweet, strangely compelling story about the power of family, love, artistic integrity and beautiful music (taking a few swipes at the music industry for good measure). The acting is pretty good.

Begin Again is an easy film to digest, but if you start to think about it too hard, you'll wind up realizing it's really not thinking about. It's predictable, simple, and everything falls into place way too easily. But it has some catchy music, a couple of good surprises, and an interesting pair of leads -- even if all of the other characters are woefully underwritten and almost superfluous. Begin Again will appeal to a specific type of audience.

Really fun movie with a great cast all putting in solid performances. This is a well told story about a guy whos down on his luck so this is the perfect role for Mark Ruffalo to play. The chemistry between the lead pair is really good which is lucky because they dominate alot of the screen time. The music is also excellent throughout and with the New York back drop makes a nice combination. I laughed througout and had a good time watching it! Definitely recommend!

I really wished this film would Begin. The first hour is a very jumbled narrative of what happens before the actual story of the film. It wasn't that interesting to me. Nor was Adam Levine's character. The rest I really enjoyed.

Everybody's great, even if some of these people are clearly "types" and don't behave in ways that real folks do. Feel like we've seen the "will they/won't they" thing before (hey, I did...in "Once") but there are enough new angles to make it work...again. Really wish Keener's ex-wife character was more fleshed out. I mean...ALOT more fleshed out. Her relationship with Ruffalo left a lot to be desired. And that's unfortunate considering that their story is meant to help carry the closing moments.

In every way a delightful film. Sweet and funny - and with some likable characters. I liked the way the whole situation turns out in the end, and that you can't predict what's going to happen. The music is not as good as in 'Once', but instead it has a plot.

It definitely doesn't lack heart, but what it does lack is good execution. The actors all do their best, but the material they have to work with simply isn't that good. Too often are problems solved by sheer coincidence, and the characters and their relations often feel forced. I did like the ending, and if you approach this movie as nothing more than very light entertainment, you'll probably have a good time. Overall though, I feel like the script really pulled this movie down.

Quick comparative with Once: between both CD soundtracks I will listen more Once, but between both Blurays I will watch more Begin Again. Anyway that doesn't mean that Begin Again has a soundtrack less than great. Fortunately it has also a much better story (and better told) and works great as a movie in more levels than Once that depended too much in an awesome soundtrack. I just think it was too naive about showing creative work, I would've like to see some struggle while writing or recording.

Never knew that Kiera Knightley could sing (reminds me of Nina Persson) John Carney seems to have this thing about unrequited love, that works in his films, avoiding the usual Hollywood ending. Ruffalo is always great when he's kind of a schleb (see "You Can Count On Me" for more proof)

You can't make Once twice. Once was incredible. This just...bleh. If you loved Once this is its antithesis: overproduced pop soundtrack with mediocre singers, celebrity cameos, regular acting. It just drips hollywood in every frame.

Carney captured lighting in a bottle with "Once", a film that felt genuine and earned its warming of hearts. This one starts off with far more resources behind it (bigger budget, all-star cast) but just feels like a bit too much. The music is overproduced MOR stuff this time around and it just tries too hard to win you over. There's a scene where Knightley criticizes Adam Levine's character for overproducing a song and losing the heart of it, which seems like a perfect analogy for this film.

it's a heart warming story, despite being full of shit, it's the kind of shit i'd buy for a dollar. ruffalo is on top form here, and his platonic relationship with knightley is quite unique. there's only one caveat, the girlie-indie music might not be for everyone.

Charming film about music and relationships. Well shot, acted and edited with tight pacing. This a very earnest film, and the only minor criticism is that at times it's perhaps a little glib, which actually sells itself short. Beneath the surface there's quite a lot going on, and it speaks well to the fundamental difficulties of self-expression. For all its polish, it also nails the ad-hoc indie shoe-gaze music making process to a tee, or at least, the most desirable, warm-hearted version of it.

It's an idealistic music centered story but not overly sugary. Keira's acting has improved in recent years, I'm liking her more and more. She and Ruffalo make a great duo, accompanying each other nicely. I'm glad they didn't go down the obvious road with their characters and avoided some romance cliches.

I don't think I would play the movie again but I would like to set the music from this film on repeat. Keira Knightley plays a struggling musician living in New York who happens to have drunken Mark Ruffalo stumble into her life as a music producer. The two of them hit it off (not romantically for once) and make beautiful music together...

The slightly awkward camerawork, editing, and acting at first feel a little amateurish but quickly grow on you as the two main characters (of strikingly moving backstories) are developed (the unique flashback format is excellent), giving the film an invigorating down-to-earth, natural feel that's perfect for its sweet streets of New York-set script about music and relationships. It gets a tad cheesy at points but mostly stays fresh, inspiring, and enjoyable-particularly for the music lover.

All the cheesy bits of "Once" but without any of the charm. Songs that are tolerable in early "unfinished" versions become insufferable pap once the characters have "perfected" them. Most of all, Begin Again reminds us that any time you hear the word "authenticity", someone's probably attempting a swindle. Is it a coincidence that a movie filled to the brim with Apple products concludes that artists should skip the studios & record companies and sell their music online for a dollar instead?

Another unique Carney "musical," focusing on music making and performances (reminiscent of HBO's Treme). Characters (musical idealists) and story were just just OK, using similar male-female dynamic in *Once*, except Ruffalo-Knightley have a more uncle-niece vibe. Really liked the way Carney arranges past and present events non-chronologically. Good direction. Loved the music (more mainstream pop than music in *Once*).

Begin Again is solid enough with its addictive music and good characters. The acting is mostly solid as well, as Knightley, Ruffalo, and Steinfeld all turn in good performances. There's two problems with the film, though: the pacing and Adam Levine. There is a massive flashback in the film's opening that breaks up the film's flow too much, and Levine's acting comes off as unconvincing, especially towards the latter part of the film. That being said, it's still a fun view for the musician in me.

A corny pile of trash. The only reasonable explanation anyone would have to claim this film as groundbreaking, to enjoy the music, or to rate this film anything beyond tolerable would be if it was the first movie they have ever seen. Or if they watched it directly after Borat or The Pink Panther 2.

A nice, feel-good fluff piece. Bit variable quality of the songs, and I wasn't entirely convinced by Keira Knightley's casting (I feel like the character was supposed to be more Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and Keira just isn't that), but I enjoyed Mark Ruffalo shlubbing up. Basically its main problem is that it compares unfavourably with the peerless "Once".

As much as I was expecting Keira Knightley to be hugely annoying and failworthy as a singer, and Mark Ruffalo's producer to be some creepy pervert dad figure, I have to admit that the film's characters and twee indie ethos won me over sooner rather than later. John Carney may not be Shakespeare but he does have a huge knack for concocting fun love stories about musicians and their industry. Apart from being quite mainstream and a few weak casting choices, the movie didn't have that many flaws.

When your movie is about a singer-songwriter who makes mediocre music and looks really weird when she sings (and not in a good way, I'm afraid, Keira), you're in trouble. When Mark Ruffalo can't quite save a film with his likeability and general awesomeness, it's in trouble. And both is the case here ... which, by my calculations, equals DOUBL... oh nevermind.

A musical fairy tale! Rather sweet, and if it succeeds at all (highly debatable), it is only thanks to two immensely likable leads. As a musician who lives in NYC, I kept experiencing a lot of jarring disconnects from reality--I can assure you NOTHING happens in the music business (or in NYC, for that matter) the way it's depicted here. I outgrew fairy tales decades ago.
