This is very much what I'd consider a contemplative film. The plot is a bit slow and meandering but it also has a poignancy about it and a sort of symbolism too. I liked the child featured and how the two people, from either side of the earlier Spanish civil war, regard each other. There are some good performances from Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and Omar Sharif. If there were a few less of the overly long and somewhat drab scenes then I'd prefer it but for what it is, its certainly an OK film.

Zinneman's film adaptation of the novel by Emeric Pressburger is a handsome production that suffers somewhat from the bizarre casting of Peck, Quinn and Sharif as Spaniards. Each do what they do best, and the film works, but you never really buy Sharif as a Spanish priest. The film builds to a climax that seems like it is supposed to be a grand statement, but it comes off a depressing and nihilistic.
