Being 17

Strong teen drama about becoming a man, being responsible, and finding your place in society. Great acting from the two boys who are alternately at each other's throat or making peace. The hatred and contempt they display is visceral, and their physical confrontations electrifying. The softer scenes of the film are a little harder to believe, and take up too much screen time. All done in an engaging and authentic Alpine setting whose ruggedness makes a great backdrop for this love/hate story.

This coming of age drama doesn't quite measure up to screenwriter Céline Sciamma's work as a director ('Water Lilies' and 'Tomboy' - though I actually like it slightly better than 'Girlhood'). But Kiberlain is strong as the mother.
