Based on the idea that what has weight in our lives should carry weight in philosophy, Being in the World opens up a dialogue between scholars, artists, and master craftsmen culled from around the globe (from a Japanese carpenter and a Louisiana chef, to a jazz pianist and a flamenco guitarist) to explore how Heideggerian phenomenology and its contemporary offshoots may help us to radically rethink psychology, technology, and the ways in which we understand, negotiate, and in-habit the world. This movie is designed to be comprehensible for complete laypeople, and I think it succeeds. But even for philosophy students like me, there's a lot to gain from this doc: its examples, its energy, its applications to different subjects, and its various approaches from various philosophers. It probably won't convince many stubborn positivist teenagers (like my past self), but that's okay.

A tocsin for every practical man who believes himself exempt from the influence of intellectual history while unwittingly betraying it in his every word and deed. A wise and inspiring film in a world in need of inspired wisdom perhaps as never before.
