Beirut

I thought this was great. Brad Anderson's movies are always entertaining, even if they're not particularly good. However, Beirut is paced well and the acting is all quite good, all lead by the fantastic Jon Hamm. It's a shame this movie didn't do well commercially or at the box office. It's very well-made.

Slow start but then it keeps suspense on. Hamm is great and Pike is just a pretty 'skirt'.

For some reason it had a low PSI. Glad I watched it. It's a great movie.

Outstanding direction with a superb script, and Jon Hamm is really showing off his range. This started off on R/T with rating in the 70s but with an audience score in the teens. That had to be the result of a negative campaign since it's up in the 40s now with only 342 ratings. All of the earliest ratings on IMDb were 1/10 as well, and with the same talking points.

Calling this film Beirut, as if it was some exposé about the city and its warring factions was a BIG mistake, but not the biggest mistake. THAT was its pacing. So slow to start, establishing that this will be a film with incessant talking and exposition, and yet at the end it was rushed and very difficult to follow. Almost as bad was the throw away line at the end of the film, so reminiscent of Hollywood, that "everybody got what they wanted", along with the ubiquitous 'smiles'. I didnt really.

Quite an average film, feels quite 90s

Movie was near perfect.

Not a bad movie, but I got bored several times. It needed better story telling, less talking and a little more action. Jon Hamm was a bit monotone. It needed more for Rosamond Pike. I disliked the use of foreign languages without subtitles. A tiresome story and a lot of joyless dialog. Nice tense ending.

Great example of how constant lame music can ruin and alleviate a great deal of the tension -- also, the film's biggest surprise (that doesn't use music) is stuck at the start of the trailer, so look out! Not sure if the film improves as it goes on or if it just drags me down to its level, but the tension does get more palm-sweatingly palpable as the screws get tightened, leading up to a memorably thrilling ending. I love Jon Hamm, i may be gay for him. This said, the movie is pretty average. It has the ambition to explain the political forces behind a period of middle-east history, but the result is characters explaining things to the audience and name-dropping. At least for the first half, the second half is a high pace thriller with a lot of explosions and plot-twists sometimes predictable. Beirut is shown, as tradition in hollywood movies, as an exotic place. It's a solid genre movie, nothing more.

hamm and pike are great together, but this is pretty forgettable.
