The story begins in the 60s as Madeleine (Sagnier) leaves Paris to meet her new husband, Jaromil, in Prague. As Soviet tanks roll into the city in 1968, the couple is separated. Decades later, the 90s, and Madeleine, now played by Deneuve, sees her daughter (Mastroianni, Deneuve's real-life daughter), fall for a man in London - but her love goes unrequited.

a bit long and lose the rhythm sometimes but overall fun to watch... nice soundtrack with french love songs and Janacek string quartets

A messy, clumsy package of uninspired songs, sang by precarious performances, and love stories full of pleasure and pain, all of them shot by Honoré' in a chic, exquisite fashion. The thing is: these mom-and-daughter's affairs feel epic, gigantic, but also small, simple-minded, merely crowd-pleasing cinema.

As easy/tempting as it is to trace Honore's lineage to the Nouvelle Vague/Demy, here i think the better comparison would actually be to a perfect hybrid of late-period Almodovar (the colors, the melodrama, the sexual fluidity, the women-focused narrative) and Desplechin (the epic feel applied to intimate subjects, plus the quintessential French talkiness of course). Which is to say, it's pretty fantastic, if admittedly a bit long. Plus i haven't seen Paul Schneider in anything in a while.
