A breathtaking portrait of a troubled peasant family. It's poetry in the form of a documentary that won many prizes. Beautifully shot in vintage black and white, the film tells the story of two times widow Anna Belova who lives together with her brother Mikhail. Blending the two personalities, Kosakovsky characterizes the true Russian soul: she is the rational worker, honest and strong - he is the drunken poet, the idealist, his philosophy fades into radical nonsense time after time. Bitter and angry, sometimes satisfied but often frustrated, the two sibling leads laugh and cry and rant as the mood strikes. There's a sense of tradition here, but it's very much perceived as obligation. That could make for interesting drama but despite some high points it doesn't come together. I wonder if knowing Russian would help make the various rants and contemplations more immediate by not being filtered through subtitles.

The woman is a wise, working person that is close to "earth," humble and poetic (in the sense of "poiesis", i.e. doing things). The man is ignorant, hence questioning everything, and detached from the humility of the earth, constantly looking for "ideas" that are up there somewhere. As she says, the man is a parasite, he exploits her labor and makes up excuses for it. The woman is Dionysiac. She knows when to labor and when t dance, dance and cry as she appropriates the means of filmmaking.
