Both the '25 and the '59 versions are classics admitted into the national registry. To think that this got green lit shows a great deal of hubris from basically everyone involved. And even stranger, choosing Bekmambetov, who's been muddling around in fantasy action movies for the last two decades, that just sounds like a bunch of jackasses who don't know what they're doing got put in charge. File it under another shameless cash grab with enough money to make it look pretty.

I did like the central chariot race alright - unfortunately, that was also just about all I enjoyed. Everything else feels like extremely generic sword and sandals paint by numbers. Oh, except for when the film suddenly turns into Passion of the Christ at the end... but I don't mean that as a compliment.

I kinda wish it didn't exist. I mean, it's actually not that bad. It's a fairly competent film, but that's about it. It has some decent scenes, the chariot race being a highlight, just like the 1959 version, but there's a lot of boredom to be had in between. I really wanted this to be good because I've wanted Huston to succeed since his amazing role in Boardwalk Empire, but yeah, this ain't his star-making turn. He gives a fine performance, but it's a forgettable film.

Solid epic film making makes a nice change from the doom and gloom post-GLADIATOR entries in this genre, creating a generally exciting and involving retelling of Wyler's blockbuster. While it can't compete with the overwhelming scope of the earlier film, it actually bests it in terms of its faster pacing and less cornball piousness (even if Christ himself figures much more extensively this time around). 'Happy ending' finale is a pretty serious misstep, and Freeman is given little to do.

Well, there was some good CGI but the story was totally lost. Would be nice to see again the original.

Only half as bad as I would have thought. It passes the time, but not much more than that. *Okay

The actors rarely rise above the level of monotonous, and that includes Morgan Freeman as an African sheik who sells horses for chariot races. To be fair, you can see a glint of mischief in Freeman's eyes. But the movie soon blots out any hint of fun, ferocity or imagination. Ben-Hur wants to preach, brother, preach, but it lacks the essential quality to do that effectively: soul.

It streamlines the original's story–and better establishes Judah and Messala's friendship–and it is engrossing, ably acted and suitably epic but it suffers, like many of its ilk, of trying to cover too much and being too long, without justifying it.

Takes a very great long while to get to the point and then rushes the final part. Pretty sure that whole Jesus subplot could have been cut. And I'm not trying to say that Jews look a certain way ... actually, that's exactly what I'm saying; maybe next time get some actors who actually look like Jews?

BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL BEN-HUR!!! The short hackjob from 1907, I mean. Is nowhere near the 1925 or 1959 adaptations, then again few films are. Unfortunately Ben-Hur (2016) feels a lot of the time like a History Channel docudrama than a epic of proportions. Terribly defused start, okay ending. Bland overall.

The chariot race is good. The naval battle is great. The rest is just a bit embarrassing.

One excellent ship battle surrounded by a load of average. More of that and less Jesus please

I might have liked it if they sticked with the original story. The core of the movie has been corrupted. Therefore it is a terrible movie to watch if you know the original.

While it does possess both style--a number of scenes are kinetically brilliant--and substance, the priority lies in the former, to its ultimate detriment. The crux of the story lies in a relationship (between Judah and Masala) not given enough development to produce what could have been profound fulfillment. A good film, but not special.

Lots of haters for a decent movie. It was good enough to keep me entertained for two hours, what else can I ask for, really? The scenes with Jesus made me cringe, but I guess they're part of the original book, so I'll allow it. That ship battle was top fucking notch, and the rest of the movie managed to make me care about the characters and the action. Doesn't deserve to flop like that. Would be a 8/10 or even 9/10 if there wasn't that Jesus shit towards the end.

Too maudlin at the end. Battle scene between Romans and Greeks was very good.

More sprightly than DeMIlle's ponderous 1959 epic, in some ways it could be considered more faithful to the book. I'm worried it will be judged too harshly. It's not a bad film, and worked very well in 3D.

Every summer on the last Saturday before school starts I make my kids go with me to the movies one last time. It's always a gloomy depressing day but we act like we're having fun which only makes it more depressing. Usually it ends up being a movie the kids don't particularly wanna see. Last year it was FANTASTIC FOUR. This year it's BEN-HUR.

Could I have done without seeing this movie in 3D? Totally. It doesn't COMMAND that you see it in 3D. But it's a movie that you definitely should see on a big screen if you're going to see it at all, and I'm glad I saw it. I rather enjoyed myself, and I think I'm growing increasingly "forgiving" (read: tolerant) of religiously-themed cinema. Maybe it's because I usually see these movies with my mother and she always really enjoys them. Take it for what it is: convention done pretty well.

"It's not a story about revenge, but a story about forgiveness," director Timur Bekmambetov told the Business Insider this year. And that is very true. All the betrayal and thirst for revenge, and all its brutality, ultimately help highlight the movie's heartening message: that love and forgiveness have more power than a thundering horde of chariots. Eski filmin yanına yaklaşamıyor, mumla aratıyor tabi ama yine de konu iyi olduğu için keyifle izleniyor. Vasatın az üzerinde demek mümkün filmin adına bakıp beklentileri çok yükseltmemek lazım.

Well, OK. No one wanted this but whatever. Feels too long at 2 hours but still has the most important plot and character development rushed in at the end. It's not terrible, actually it's kind of fine, but it is unnecessary and there are a lot of things wrong with it. One of the least of which - though somewhat of note - is Jack Huston and Toby Kebbell inexplicably being the leading men in a $100m production. Clearly there's been a mix-up.

My first encounter with Ben-Hur, and it was a pleasant one! I don't get the bad ratings. Since iv'e got nothing to compare it to i went into it open minded. I think the acting was pretty good and the special effects was also very good. The story is a little bit like The gladiator, but with horses instead of swords and Jesus himself is thrown into the mix. I'm not blown away, but far better than the ratings suggest.
