Elucidates each character’s viewpoint while never insisting on a single interpretation of the whole. The key dialogue critiques the metaphysical opposition of the universal and the particular, which is also to say, the spiritual and the material, and the way this plays out in sexual terms in the history of Christianity. Directed towards contemporary times as much as to historical experience, with hints of a commentary on the #metoo movement. Efira, Patakia, Rampling and Wilson are all very good.

Hot take: it's really about how the will to become a saint makes you a narcissist. Also hot: the lez action, the jesus action scenes and HOLY MARY MOTHER OF FUCK Charlotte Rampling

Decent nuns gone wild flick, but not as incisive into the acetic nature of repressive convents as you'd think, nor is it as sexy. A lot of the lesbianism build-up is kinda dull, and the latter part of the film is more interesting when it introduces the district Father who breaks quarantine despite making everyone else comply to it (gee, sounds familiar).

Verhoeven has never avoided confronting female desire, but this viewer could not ignore the feeling that the religious context blunts the force of this engagement by seeming too familiar, and therefore obvious, despite the director's idiosyncratic touches. There were also too many silly moments that did not mesh well with the dramatic ones. The acting is generally good though, and fans of this director will undoubtedly find things to appreciate.

Pure Verhoeven. Is this film for you? There's a scene where a pregnant woman takes out her breast and squirts milk at someone. This is lurid, sexual, and exciting in a way that only a pervert director could make.

What else could real religious belief be except an ability to see and love the infinite in all kinds of finite existence, including our sexuality, the deepest and most striking stigmatic sign of our finitude, which we could want to run away from with the strongest murderous repulsion?

The result of the collision between Verhoeven's natural inclination for scandal and counter-reformation Catholicism's undercurrents of greed, cynicism and sexually charged mysticism threatens to become too outré, and during its worst moments the film has more than a whiff of the straight-to-video erotic thriller—but it's difficult to imagine telling Carlini's astonishingly weird story any other way, and the direction and performances are often engrossing (Rampling and Wilson especially).

Viewed September 26, 2021. The movie is extremely tactile, as sensitive to the specificity of a romantic embrace as it is the moments of brutal, gut-churning violence, so that the moments of love — or, more accurately, liberation — create a certain ambiguity around all of the satirical jabs. The movie’s finale furiously cycles through emotions, as I found myself oddly invested in the movie’s central relationship despite all of the hilariously sacrilegious stuff going on in the foreground

What is a real miracle? To see your way around the restrains of the world - or the drawn up laws or order - if that’s so we may think how god blesses us. Apart from that yes lesbianism is a great part of this movie to emphasize our relation to the world /also our very own being / through our bodies.

Maybe not as visually stunning as Elle, but hell yeah, Verhoeven might be the only living filmmaker capable of pulling this thing of. Such a tone-shifter from start to finish, specially in the second half, where much happens and also doesn't -- it's mostly a series of visions of eroticism and spiritual connection, desires being frontally consummated and religious encounters that could be pure human faith manifestations or actually God speaking to us. Who cares.

If I were in the mood for Verhoeven's somewhat demented brand of historical fiction, I'd prefer to rewatch 'Zwartboek', and as for movies about witchhunts, more than a handful of better titles (including 'Day of Wrath' and 'Witchfinder General') spring to mind. However, even if the first acts are slow, it's still a really solid film overall, and Wilson and the three female leads give strong performances.

Tombul tombul memeler

I really need to stop going to the theater to watch weird French movies that I know nothing about. Anyway, this was definitely something different. Terrific performances. I thoroughly enjoy how Virginie Efira was meant to be in her early 20s the entire time & it was played totally straight. To her credit, I kinda bought it. Some deeply uncomfortable moments. Some very funny moments. "Miracles don't happen in bed, trust me." Certainly a memorable watch, I'll be thinking about it quite a bit.

I'm sometimes in a forgiving mood when it comes to Verhoeven's bad taste; his best film is Showgirls after all. Let's just say he walks a thin line and when he stumbles there's nothing to catch him. Because this vile trash is just an endless, obvious provocation - the leering perv hand in hand with the snickering audience. The concept was tired from the moment it was announced, and in a world where The Devils exists for decades now, this self-satisfied, cheap softcore production won't do.
