A very lovely and off-beat romantic comedy involving social outsiders. The cast give it a real push. And I think Depp fans must agree that he has never ever been this charming, before or since!

Benny & Joon ultimately isn't really that good. In the end, it is just too boring, and the laughs are too few and far between to make it all that enjoyable. Johnny Depp's character is certainly memorable enough, and while the other actors do their jobs just fine, they don't really get all that much development. In fact, Benny actually gets the most characterization, but since he plays an easy character to relate to, Sam still stands out, just due to some of the wacky things that he gets to do.

Benny and Joon is one of the more unique romantic comedies of the lest few decades. The characters are all very original, and in my opinion, Johnny Depp has never been better. It's a sweet story with very good, yet subtle, humor. Really good!

Likeble dramady of Misfits In Love and the troubled "normal" brother (Quinn) who is too busy caring for them to have a life of his own. Depp craftily mimics the routines of Keaton and Chaplin. Minor but charming.

A little predictable, but Benny & Joon is well directed thanks to Chechik along with its lead roles and performances from Depp, Masterson, and Quinn.

a very endearing love story that works mainly due to the great cast and their performances. by themselves, joon and sam might be a little grading, but when they're together, the chemistry they have is undeniable and incredible. aidan quinn plays the protective brother role really well and it's easy to tell how much love he has for joon. all in all, it's a nice, quirky love story that i found very enjoyable.

I like Aiden Quinn, and I liked how this movie said that even if you are mentally ill, you can make your own decisions in pursuit of your own happiness.

Shamefully stupid with insipid romance. Tone-deaf, ignorant portrayals of mental illness are not remotely aided by a disinterested Aidan Quinn who's saddled with the most blasé dialogue the 90s rom-com machine can muster.

Great use of I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) by the Proclaimers. A decent movie, the story line is good, and Johnny Depp does a great job in his role.

Cute and sweet-natured comedy-drama falls into the uncomfortable line of films that use mental illness as a convenient, and slightly troubling, prop - the vague and undefined nature of Masterson's illness makes the film seem more contrived and manipulative than it is; if the Benny & Joon relationship was a more "conventional" father-daughter story, it might have sat better. Still the film is a good reminder of how much fun Depp's oddball schtick was before it became too calculated.

We should always remember that is movie is not about Sam, but Benny & Joon. Their relationship is profoundly better developed but we, in our Depp-fever, are always forgetting it.

Intermittently charming, but there sure is a lot of mugging going on... a cast with a lot of talent, (mostly) poorly utilized. The song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers is the best thing about this movie.

This film was sorta depressing. While it was neat to see Johnny Depp do crazy shit for a while, he was, more or less, an idiot. And Masterson's character was almost completely unlikable. I guess I hate incompetence, and the film seemed to flaunt it. Meh.

Too self-consciously cute for my liking. Like a kid who's learned "precociously endearing" catchphrases from television and uses them to milk coos of adulation from weakminded adults. The characters were rather annoying.

Funny, touching and engaging. Mary Stuart Masterson plays Joon as fiesty, intelligent and in control despite her illness, a beautiful performance. Johnny Depp is as watchable as ever. Uncomfortable enough in the right places, funny and touching in all the right places too. Some critics think it santises mental illness - I submit that it shows a person is more than their illness and can have love, happiness and a life they enjoy despite it.

This movie taught me that if you act perfectly normal but sometimes you like to wear a scuba mask and make a smoothie out of cereal, then you're completely insane and your brother must take care of you. But that's okay, because you'll find a handsome boyfriend that's as loony as you are because he -get this- ENJOYS COMEDY!

Benny (Quinn) and Joon (Masterson) are brother and sister living in a small town where Benny is a well respected local mechanic and Joon is his mentally unstable sister. Things in their ho-hum life change when Sam (Depp) is given to the siblings after a losing hand in poker. Sam is an illiterate boy who loves old movies and Buster Keaton and wins the heart of Joon in this unorthadox love story.

Not at all a typical romantic comedy, though many of Benny's scenes lack remarkable note in their originality. The main draw is the off-beat characters and the fact that Johnny Depp and Mary Masterson share a love that is more unique and genuine than most "higher profile" rom-coms ever accomplish. Depp's character is extremely likeable and there are a handful of memorable lines.
