Kinda overshadowed by Fassbinder's massive version of the same story nowadays, but still good for what it is. Last time I checked, though, this is a hard movie to see if you ain't German (and I'm not), so good luck getting a chance to see it

It takes a more linear approach to the material [with few of its cultural themes, less of the political] but it could have gone much worse. Heinrich George fills the role very well, even if this is still much in the silent era.

The early version of the Berlin - Alexanderplatz and much shorter then the famous version of 1980. It still tells a good story and Heinrich George as Franz Biberkopf is the foundation that holds it together. The happenings are kind of chopped together jumping a lot, but that's understandable as they can't have as fluid a story in this 83 minute version compared to the 15+ hour version of 1980. But still you feel the struggles of Biberkopf as he tries to go straight.

Supremely ahead of its time, and it's shocking to consider what happens just a couple years after this film is released. Interesting, well done, and very daring.
