A very amusing, if not laugh-out-loud funny, comedy, with an interesting twist. It's curious to examine a community where a man could blatantly commit murder and be more or less given a pass because of his stature and likability, and the cruelty of his victim. Jack Black commits to the wholesomeness of Bernie, rather than trying to give him a creepy edge; it comes naturally anyway. Also, 2012: Year of Matthew McConaughey.

I don't know if it's the form or the story that doesn't lend itself well to this experiment. With Bernie himself I waver between him being an amateur lady killer, or someone I as a husband can honestly say has no idea how bad psychological abuse can really get. This review is a cry for help.

It's weird once you realize that real people are being interviewed and the story really happened. The way the story, these people and the actors are integrated is very skillfully done. Don't forget to watch the credits till the end.

Mildly amusing, but there is something rather coldhearted about the cavalier ease with which it is presumed that the defendant's portrayal of the victim is accurate, and the film takes a very gentle approach to questions about the nature of the relationship and Tiede's character. Is there not a kind of reverse lynch-mob mentality going on here, where the audience is asked to take more or less at face value the testimony of a handful of townsfolk that Nugent was a nasty old lady not to be missed?

Linklater brings East Texas to life with documentary-style interviews. Black disappears into his role and makes us love cold-blooded murderer Bernie Tiede as much as the citizens of Carthage did. McConaughey is a bit much; MacLaine maybe not quite bitchy enough.

Linklater doesn't seem to make the most of this little experiment. Using fiction to tell the story of the unlikely lovestory would enable him to paint af nuanced portrait of the old lady and the relationship itself. Unfortunatley he doesn't and opts for comedy instead. And while the film does say something interesting about the american system of justice it could just as well has been a standard documentary. Black shines in some scenes and misses his mark in others.

The score is largely indicative of how surprised I was of Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey's performances. They were really really good. One of Jack Blacks best. I Also think that the interviews of people who actually knew Bernie definitely gave it an air of authenticity. However, the movie suffers from a weak third act. The film doesn't create enough suspense to make you think he'd actually be found not guilty. Plus the characters (despite the great performances) start to wear thin.

While it can feel a bit slow at times Jack Black's best performance to date and the inherently weird (yet true) story will keep your eyes glued to the screen. When the real people from the town are in scenes with actual actors it works beautifully. It's too bad the mockumentary one on one interviews that that are scattered throughout the film are so hit and miss.

It's weird to even consider Bernie a "movie," as it's almost a documentary; every scene with Black, MacLaine and McConaughey could have honestly happened in real life, for all we know. Linklater takes a unique perspective by focusing on the town rather than the man, and letting them help tell his story in a way no fictionalized narrative could have.

I've always loved Jack Black, but now I know for sure he can act. Shirley McLain is restrained, bitchy when she has to be, but giving Black the room he needs to shine. The Carthage, Texas citizens who play the Greek chorus of "gossips" are wonderful too, providing great local color. Unfortunately,McConaughey isn't nearly good enough for this role--what a great part this would have been for Woody Harrelson!--and the last third of the film that features him is consequently weaker than the rest.

A really great little film. Jack Black is terrific; it's for sure the best performance of his career, but itdon't think I was surprised by how great he truly was in this. He's one of the most underrated actors out there and this performance really shows that. It sort of reminded me of Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote. Wasn't sure what to think of it - wish I'd known beforehand that it was based on a true story and that it featured non-actors giving their genuine opinion, 'cuz that's pretty interesting. The townspeople were fun, but it didn't feel that dramatic aside from the ending, and the comedic stuff wasn't really funny (especially not in retrospect, what with it being reality based), just more of a bummer.

The way Black throws himself so completely into these hymns is the way he absorbs every other bit of Bernie's character, playing this thing as straight as can be, leaving it up to the situations and story to communicate both tragedy and comedy. I didn't realise that this was based on a true story so the half talking head, half film combo seemed a bit off at times. After the fact, I just think this was billed wrong as it's a doc with dramatic reconstruction. The nature of the town along with the mockumentary style, while amusing at first, becomes an obvious lecture on favoritism and hypocrisy, and an endless torrent of unfunny interviews. It also becomes a weird courtroom drama, where McConaughey is inexplicably acting as prosecutor despite being the arresting officer on the case. Oh, and at the end we get to see pics of the woman who was murdered, now that her death has been made a joke of. Classy. Jack Black and McConaughey were good, at least.

An excellent role for Black whose musical performances are delightful. I was hoping for some solid black humor, but this is a "comedy" because it treats the material lightly; I would only call one scene funny (upselling a casket). Jack Black is surprisingly restrained and I've enjoyed some of Linklater's work, but this did very little for me. It didn't seem to have much suspense, and the real-life DA may be right that an actual murder isn't great fodder for a dark comedy, but after reading Linklater saying "it reads boring [...] but they'll be funny characters.[...] I could just imagine the accents." Definitely worth the watch. 'Bernie' is one of those films that truly benefits from researching it beforehand - the story of its impact, Tiede living with Linklater, all the court manoeuvres - enriches the viewing. I'm not entirely persuaded by its attempt to sanitise and erase the murder of Mrs Nugent; however, it's interesting to see how McConaughey's character does become the antagonist + the court scene is great. It's also something of a character study in many respects. Accolades must be given to Jack Black who delivered a flawless performance of such a wonderfully eccentric character. The comedy here, much of which is very effective (the division of Texas was right on), serves as a counterpoint to the more dramatic, even horrific elements of the film. The inclusion of real townspeople among the "interviewees" underscores the horror as they illustrate, with their own words, the power of mass delusion. Through the use of laughter and local color, the film's darker sensibility sneaks up on us, and those final real-life photos and footage slam home cold facts of the case.

The interviews help to keep the pace up, especially early in the film, but they start to disappear in the middle and the film suffers. Black and McConaughey are fun to watch in an atypical way, while MacLaine sadly has little to do. There's a lot of interesting exploration of morality in a small-town and religious sensibilities, and while the film is entertaining for the most part, there are a few major dead spots where it just loses focus on the story.

The cast of locals were wonderful-- totally appreciated the brutal honesty. Great flick. Jack Black is a great singer in every genre apparently. Absolutely nutty tale from Texas.

Probably the best mockumentary I've ever seen. Black surprises in the lead and MacLaine and McConaughey support him well.

This is made with a mixture of real and fake footage. It is a little boring at times, but an interesting experiment.

Bernie is a great film, and should definitely be seen. The directing, the acting, the writing - all of it adds up to make a very thought-provoking and unique, yet not completely humorless, film.

Jack Black is a breath of fresh air but fails to keep this movie from being an avrage flick.

Linklater's intertwining of real interviews with a fictionalized narrative is inspired. One of Jack Black's best performances.

Editing the score down a bit, rated it 8.0 when I saw it, but now I think it's more of a when 6.9 thinking back. Idk why I overrated it in the first place. It's a decent film, but doesn't really stand out that much.

Its amazing how good Jack Black can be when he plays an actualy character rather than himself. I wasnt aware of the 'Bernie' backstory so I went into this with fresh eyes and I think this is a well executed interesting drama story. I imagined there would be a little more comedy in the narrative as Jack Black is the lead but I struggled to find any laughs. The performances across the board are fantastic and when you have a true story as captivating as this it definitely delivers on screen.
