There is some inherent cheesiness to the film to be sure but the chemistry is genuine and when done right you can never go wrong with movies about how hopes and dreams hinge on one man and one fight, how our names cast shadows we must fight our way out of and that winning in here (place hand over heart) just plain feels good.

It's not listed among most ambitious and provoking movies ever made, but it's so darn entertaining.

The score is based solely on the ending competition scene, where there is some pretty excellent fight choreography. The rest of the movie is your typical so-so 80's American martial arts fare.

Extremely cheesy, horribly acted, but thoroughly enjoyable because of those things.

Some bad directing but other wise this is a good martial arts tournament movie. Worth of watching.

Laughably cheesy and inherently enjoyable 80s karate tournament movie. Why is it inherently enjoyable? Because it's from the 80s and there's a goddamn karate tournament! I love that 80s aesthetic, so I like it. Tough shit!

Holy melodrama. It's like a karate soap opera. Ugh. Don't watch this. Just watch Karate Kid, THAT'S a classic (which this steals from). Or watch the Rocky series, or some classic Kung Fu, or the best of Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Tony Jaa. Or samurai flicks. Or the Raid movies. There's so many quality fighting flicks out there!

Hollywood doesn't do martial arts very well at all, but they really know how to make movies about "winning". This martial arts sports movie ticks all the right genre boxes. How much of my appreciation of it is nostalgia? I'm not sure - but it's cheesy good fun and holds my attention throughout: when it's on I sit and watch it and enjoy it.

A movie which tries to depict an karate (or is it a taekwondo, the fucking movie doesn't even know or seems to care there is a difference!,) professional sport tournament as some kind of hardedge fighting competition like Bloodsport, with the Korean being depicted as a mysterious evil organization. Also who the fuck thought Eric Roberts would make for a good action star? Luckily Philip Rhee fares a little better.
