This is a film about the male gaze. The tween male gaze. Portrayed by a male that genuinely loves pageantry. The two kids from The Visit are stuck in another house with a twist plot that twists itself into an entirely different movie. Both movies have their strengths but they sit together awkwardly.

I thought I'd never say this before, but it starts off as a decent home invasion type flick, but about half way through twists to something entirely different, unique, and actually pretty sucky. I'm usually one to hate home invasions, and love twists, but against my instincts, I was wishing that twist didn't happen. Additionally, it was billed as a comedy, but I found no humor in it. Maybe if, after the credits rolled, I was allowed to personally strangle Levi Miller, then I'd be satisfied.

Starring the illegitimate 7th child of a potato chip baron and his stoner friend, Better Watch Out is an off-rails coming-of-age Home Alone with a dash of Santa Claus and lots of blood. It requires approximately 27 brain cells to watch, and though all will die in the process, the rest of the cells will probably not be in a position to complain overmuch. Tl;dr: it's not directed by McG.

Home Alone by Wes Craven. Home invasion upside down in evil angel psycho horror. Babysitter faces all kinds of men - actual boyfriend, former, pervert kid. Almost every twist works until they don't - but the last delivers. Some amount of shock really makes this fun - ketchup and mustard, bff killed with a shotgun, that 80s ST's evil dude dead by hanging. Kids drinking, smoking pot, harassing the babysitter and killing people. How come did this fucked up 80s excesses ripoff didn't become a hit?

This movie started off great. The setup and initial suspense was excellent. But when it twisted, it went entirely in the wrong direction. Instead of continuing the home invasion, it quickly becomes torture porn. I honestly quit paying full attention around that point, nearly checking out completely, only invested in sticking it through to see the ending. And the ending was only mildly satisfactory, particularly with the mid-credits scene muddying the waters.

Good until the shift a third way through, then it became stupid and lame. Great acting, especially by the three leads.

Now that's more like it in the babysitter department. Excellent balance of comedy and horror, well cast, and while the first twist is the one that propels the whole movie from there on out, it's still got enough tricks up its stocking to keep you hopping. We're not spoiled with good Christmas-themed horror movies, but this one's on the list.

The first twenty minutes or so were awesome but once the reveal happens it goes down hill fast and never recovers. The second part was decent with some surprisingly good acting but it's just such a letdown from that amazing beginning.

Better Watch Out is an amusing seasonal thriller. Perhaps worth watching alongside The Babysitter?

SJW horror. If you think male entitlement is the biggest problem facing the world, this film is tailor made for you and will no doubt serve as confirmation bias for your reductive worldview. It's another example of how a genre film can get some exposure by pretending to have a socially redeeming message because, you know, straight horror is for morons. The film looks OK for a cheapie, but once the 'twist' is revealed it spins its wheels like a desperate crackhead and never recovers.

Interesting... Better Watch Out is best watched going in blind, like I did. It starts off smooth and suddenly smacks you in the head with an interesting twist. The acting is solid with Levi Miller giving a surprisingly good performance from a child actor. The pacing is also good with the film never really dragging, and being relatively short to not overstay it’s welcome. Maybe not the most pleasant Horror-Thriller, it’s darker than you may expect.

Not entirely sure why I didn't like it more. It was a pretty good take on the home invasion thriller.

{{ CHRISTMAS MOVIE MARATHON - DAY 5 }} Had to switch up the genre for my sanity. There's only so many traditional Christmas movies I can take in a row. This is a slasher film that takes place during the holidays...still counts. I liked the twist that changed the entire narrative completely (it's like a reverse of McG's The Babysitter) but there was hardly any blood and all the kill shots were cut out. Damn PG horror films need to die!

Wow!! This is how you do a horror comedy. I laughed, i jumped in the air and I didn't want this movie to end. When you think you have seen it before, you realize that you haven't. At all. This movie was perfectly done in every aspect. Levi Miller a upcoming future star? I think so. He nailed it!

This was hard to watch, from a female perspective. Yeah, it's making a point about male privilege and class privilege and it's not even attempting to portray the little asshole in a positive light, but it's just too close to reality to really be comfortable for me.

Better Watch Out is about a pretentious try-hard 12 year old trying to get some babysitter pussy and accomplish a dream for all kids who don't understand the way the world works. In this incredibly annoying and anxiety-inducing ode to Home Alone and Black Christmas, the director unleashes a ton of wild and wacky twists on you. Without any spoilers, let me just tell you how much I disliked watching this. Of course I wanted to see how it ended so I stayed but it was not worth it for 20 seconds of

Featuring a pair of great performances by Miller & DeJonge, as well as fun appearances by Madsen & Warburton, it's a fast-moving & high-intensity horror-comedy that does a good job of blending the two without ever seeming inconsistent. An endearing heroine, despicable villain, clever twists & turns and an ending that, while maybe not totally satisfying, definitely fits the story & the tone all combine to make for a very entertaining holiday horror that's definitely worth a watch.

A fair bit more adult-oriented than it originally pretends to be, but ultimately a ramshackle, silly romp around slightly reordered genre cliches. With the serviceable acting, it isn't really that bad - if certainly not good.

Wow, what can I say. As others pointed out, I think the home invasion thing would have worked. It felt interesting and tonally different. I can appreciate what they were trying to do with the twist, but the main antagonist is simply so infuriating to watch that it sucked all the life out of the movie. It had comedic elements that could have been entertaining, but - again- none of it entertained me because the antagonist was such an annoying little asshole.

I enjoyed parts of it, how messy it was, and all that, but the script is honestly pretty weak. It's a fun, silly movie overall. I hated the little shit so much.
