Starts out with a good premise, but really drags through most of the film. There are too many bland characters trapped in an uninteresting setting, and when the film finally resolves itself the end result seems glib and obvious.

Happy to see this classic I had never heard of. Beautiful movie and great ensemble cast.

I haven’t seen the earlier version of this story - but will certainly try to catch it. This wartime afterlife fantasy takes a while to get going but is kept sailing by fine performances all round, and really comes alive when Greenstreet enters proceedings as the ‘Examiner’. I wonder if there really is somebody, somewhere named Mrs Midget?

I was not expecting it to be this good, holy shit. It was supposed to be just a mediocre melodrama, why does it have an amazing script, good dialogue and interesting characters? The reporter is so well written, I fucking cried at the end with him and the old lady, I can even get over the whole christian thing, although the “punishment” for that “type of people” makes me angry. Still, this is so engaging, it kinda remains me of “Prohibido suicidarse en primavera”

Sutton Vane's play Outward Bound was always a slow sentimental journey. But it's one that touches your heart, if you let it. With it's sappy and mysterious approach to the topic of death, you get a alternative philosophical route to understanding the fears and aftermath of dying. I really appreciate the first movie adaptation, Outward Bound (1930), so this more ambitious update 14 years later with John Garfield was a welcome remake to get a proper feel of the source material.
