For Bobby Darin (Spacey), performing was his life. It kept his heart beating. He came alive onstage, even when he was near collapse offstage. In Beyond the Sea, Bobby tells us his own story, in his last great performance. (Lions Gate Films)

Bobby Darin, as acted and sung by his biggest fan. If you enjoy this type of music, and want a nice, fantastical approach to his life, you really should watch this movie.

Spacey the actor is almost as good as Spacey the director is bad - and the result is a charming, fluffy mess.

I like musical biopics that are more about the music and less about the person. Spacey manages this with Bobby Darin's music and we learn something about Darin's life in the process.

I adore Kevin Spacey. The passion he has for Darin is infectious, and by the end- you can't help feeling like you've gotta keep singing.

A decent biography but the actor was too close to the subject matter for it to be fair.

A bad idea all around. Spacey at 45 playing Darin at 18- yikes. The biopic unintentionally paints Darin as an ineffectual, lifeless jerk with a minor career. Poorly directed and choreographed song and dance sequences, all kept in the film's first hour for some reason.

Awful, so awful. A shame, too, because I really wanted to like this.

I would have enjoyed this a lot more if all of the fantasy scenes had never existed in Kevin's imagination.

I know Kevin Spacey did this because he's a huge Bobby Darin fan and John Goodman, Michael Byrne, Kate Bosworth, Bob Hoskins, and Brenda Bleythyn probably signed on because Kevin Spacey was the Writer/Dorector/Star so, I understand the chain of events. But, what a mistake. This movie was so bad!

Not really anything too spectacular. It's a bit too long and some of the performances are odd, but it has a lot of heart. The music is great and Spacey was pretty much born to play this role. Overall it's just very average.

"This show-offy biopic of the late, great singer/songwriter Bobby Darin reveals Spacey as a shameless, slogan-reliant historical reductionist." - Keith Uhlich

Kevin Spacey's highly stylized and unconventional biopic of Bobby Darin has an energy and charm that oddly captivates. It may not be for everybody, but a film for everybody is a film for nobody.

A miscast, overlong, and ineffective biopic that is too far up it's own ass to notice that no one watching it is enjoying themselves.

I really liked this movie, it got me bored a few points along its slow traversal, but most movies this long do that. I gotta hand it to spacey, he can act like anything and make it ultimately convincing that this is who he is. maybe not the best movie ive ever seen, but its definitely one I will remember anytime I see spacey.

Spacey sparkles as Darin. But the constant switch between reality and fantasy jars a potentially good movie out of place. There was nothing overtly wrong and also nothing spectacularly right about the movie except the casting.

Hard not to hold this against Spacey because I'm such a big Bobby Darin fan.
