The little village of Villar del Río is awaiting the song performance of Carmen Vargas, 'The Great Andalusian Star'. The quiet village is governed by a deaf, naughty and good-natured Mayor, who's only seeking the way to give life to the place. By the same time good news comes to the village: the arrival of North American high personalities that will give economical aid to the nation city by city, village by village... (imdb)

A really interesting and well made dark comedy about a Spanish village hoping for U.S. foreign aid in the 1950's. The film gives us a glimpse of all the people in the village and their day to day lives, as well as their hopes and dreams when they get news of the impending arrival of the US delegation. There are a lot of criticisms of the way politics is done and the ending is really perfect.

Americans don't come off so great in this, but I have to say "Bienvenido" is a very well made and handsome film with many comedic moments and glimpses of rural Andalusian life in Villar del Campo, er, Río. It features an impressive soundtrack, and the ending was especially moving I thought. It's easy to see why this is an all-time favorite in Spain.

Yet another wonderful comedy by Berlanga. At a brisk 75 minutes and loaded with gags, it moves like gangbusters, with plenty of great moments. Most notable is the series of dream sequences towards the end, including a Western parody (complete with "fake English" as silly as saying "ching chang chong" to imitate the Chinese) and one that manages to lampoon the KKK, film noir and HUAC in less than two minutes. It's all a terrific satire of Americans, Spanish, and their perceptions of each other.

A complete-package for a political satire in the post-WW2 era, the companion to "El Verdugo" in Berlanga filmography. I would like to watch this again after a little time, because I know I will have fun and maybe notice some details about an "ordinary" village in Spain after World War II. Hell, the dream sequence is enough reason like the other reviewers said.
