For someone who just directed his first film, Dany Boon shows some real talent. This is pure entertainment, you walk away with a good feeling, and it's definitely one of the best and funniest french movies I've seen. Its reputation is well deserved.

Utterly charming comedy gets much of its mileage from spirited performances from its cast, whose sense of comic timing and expression smooth over some of the dialect-based humour which doesn't quite land when translated for an English speaker. Predictable and overly familiar sitcom-ish plotting (this feels like an extended episode of the British DOC MARTIN at times) is a small price to pay for such a delightful treat.

Not perfect but almost exactly the kind of comedy needed nowadays: refreshing, clever, with fresh jokes and a great cast (heartfelt performances by Kad Merad and Anne Marivin, the splendid Line Renaud and an awesome guest appearance by Michel Galabru).

I felt the first 15 minutes were quite awful and I even thought about stopping the dvd, but it started to grow on me and in the end I have to admit this movie has something special, even some hilarious scenes.

The plot of an outsider gradually being accepted by a community is fairly basic and nothing new. Fortunately this criticism is easily outweighed by the sheer warmth of the characters, and the constant humour, frequently based around misheard dialogue and the repetition of the best gags. The movie will punch through your defences with its relentless charm and upbeat attitude. Great performances from Kad Merad, Dany Boon and Zoé Félix. A new benchmark for French comedies.

Boon wrote, directed and starred in a feel-good film that is not just funny but charming. Merad does a splendid job as the lead, with a supporting cast that balances the comedy with chemistry. While the jokes may be French, the North-South humour and stereotypes translate surprisingly well across the Channel; and the themes of friendship and belonging are universal.

I saw this movie not in French but dubbed, so I am not sure how to judge the film when I didn't entirely get most of the dialect jokes. Still it has its moments. The first half of the movie is definitely too boring for my taste, but that could be me getting used to dubbing.

A one-joke comedy barely disguises the adulation of provincialism that permeates the whole movie.

Warm hearted and enjoyable - I’m not sure how much is lost in translation but still engaging.
