Has all the ingredients of a stupid movie I should love (fat sassy hijinx - I eat from the trough of Klump) but Martin Lawrence is not funny at all in this it’s just him struggling to not die of heat exhaustion under all that fatsuit. Would love the S. Craig Zahler remake of this.

If "Mrs. Doubtfire" was butt-raped by "The Nutty Professor" and then violently sharted, the dripping brown stain on the wall would be "Big Momma's House."

A masterpiece of the Giant Fat Black Lady Who's Really a Black Man in a Really Big Fat Suit subgenre (thank you Jellysauce). That might not mean much, but it's my way of giving a big FUCK YOU to that ass-hat Tyler Perry. Really strange seeing Giamatti and Howard in something like this. I love that they tried to bring him back for the sequel and he just said "I don't know if you heard, but, I'm Paul Giamatti." This isn't on the level of dying his skin blue opposite Frankie Muniz, but it's close.

Broadly drawn one-joke comedy takes the Clark Kent/Superman conceit a step too far -- are Lawrence and Mitchell really so interchangeable in the same room for friends and family? This lazy MRS DOUBTFIRE clone can't support this suspension of disbelief, especially with writing so grating and laboured; one particular scatological gag is worthy of a guilty laugh, but the most retrospective interest comes from seeing Howard, Giamatti and Spencer in before-they-were-famous roles.

While easy enough to sit through, moving along pretty well, it never makes the transition from amusing to funny. The movie blunders along stupidly & feels empty. Nia is hot and doesn't get enough screen time in lingerie to save the picture.

Yeah... not very funny in any sense of the word, but it did have Paul Giamatti, so there's that, right? Hmm... I don't know what the appeal was here, and that lady they were fooling must've been absolutely stupid to be fooled by this. Okay, so it's a comedy... but still.

This isn't great cinema, and it isn't even a great comedy. Despite its downfalls, though, one thing cannot be denied: it is consistently funny and I had a good time. There is a time and place for innovation in motion pictures, and then there is a time for movies you know going in what will happen. The sense of knowing sometimes even has a sort of charm about it, since it is the treatment that matters, rather than the payoff.

Martin Lawrence is having a ball as Big Momma, in a film whose fun main idea results in a lot of laughs. This is no ambitious picture but it does what it says on the can pretty well for those 90 minutes, right until the sugary finale.

FBI agent Malcolm Turner is tough, smart and a master of disguise. There's nothing he can't handle. So Malcolm, taking on his most challenging "role" ever, decides to impersonate the cantankerous Southern granny Big Momma. Using a few tricks of disguise, he completely transforms himself into Big Momma, even taking on the corpulent septuagenarian's everyday routine - from cooking soul food to delivering babies to "testifying" at the local church.

Big Momma's House is good black cinema. Martin Lawrence does for Big Momma's how what Eddie Murphy did for The Nutty Professor. Paul Giamatti and Terrence Howard add some credibility to this goofy comedy. The story has an over-the-top "Weekend with Bernie" vibe; the viewer is constantly thinking "Shouldn't they know that isn't Big Momma?" It was a fun movie. The comedy bits usually hit the mark and the action was done well enough. I'm not sure how I'll fell about the sequel though.

Well, it is palatable; Lawrence is good with physical comedy. However, the problem with this kind of comedy is that it constantly needs to search for the next gag, so it is nearly impossible to avoid that "forced" feeling; the setting does not generate a comedy moment, it is pressed like an orange to come up with something funny.
