The mining town of Peaceful Vale is a rough place, and sheriff 'Gun Shy' Gallagher can do little about it, since the town is ruled by Crooked Charley, the gambler. Charley runs Pierre the tavern keeper out of town, and takes Pierre's daughter Nell as his prisoner. But when Billy Blazes sees Charley's henchmen harassing Pierre, he rescues Pierre and then proceeds to confront Charley back at the tavern. (imdb)

The gags here--which is all this is really about--are consistently funny, and Lloyd looks more out of place than ever in the cowboy getup. That works for his character, both in the film narrative and with the audience. The real cowboys underestimate him, just like the audience does, leading him to find increasingly surprising and funny ways of avoiding the gambler's bullet.

Lloyd did a fair few of these Western comedies, and this is one of the looser ones, though it does add some outdoor scenes and horses into the mix.

"Peaceful Vale - nobody has been killed here for almost 20 minutes." The best short western spoof I've seen. Harold Lloyd looks so ridiculous and his antics are so perfect that I was laughing throughout. I also find his title cards the wittiest of the silent comedians. I don't normally rate shorts on Criticker, but this had to be included.
