Birdemic: Shock and Terror

2010
Romance, Suspense/Thriller
1h 45m
A platoon of eagle and vultures attack the residence of a small town. Many people died. It's not known what caused the flying menace to attack. Two people managed to fight back, but will they survive Birdemic? "The Birds" star Tippi Hedren is in all three of his films, but she only shot footage for the first one. He reuses the footage he shot with her in LA in his other two movies and puts her name right up on the poster. (imdb, mediayenta.blogspot.com)

At one time I thought Manos: The Hands of Fate was the worst movie of all time. Now I know another film shares that title. Truly this shares many of the same flaws. An idiotic script, atrocious local actors, terrible production values (especially sound editing), the special effects are absolutely horrendous and shit that doesn't even make sense. This film is pretty much a text-book example of how to not make a film.

This is it. This really is The Worst Movie. Makes other horrible things seem a little better in comparison. Stuff like genocide, self-mutilation, impotence and mothers-in-law are all a-ok in my book since they're not BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND GODDAMN TERROR.

I say this a lot about a bad movie, but this movie REALLY is the worst movie ever made. I should change all my 0-scored movies, cause they all are masterpieces compared to this rubbish. Thank god it's hilariously bad, otherwise I think I would've died. I love the kamikaze-plane-birds though and their little explosions

It's incredible how inept this film is. Even the sound editing is terrible. There was a visible boom mike. Character behavior is nonsensical. The stupid birds don't appear for the first half of the film. The writer first tortures us with a dull as dishwater love story and a main character who works in tech sales even though he obviously knows absolutely nothing about the tech industry, or human behavior for that matter. Congratulations, filmmakers, it's the worst POS I ever sat through.

"My First Movie" by James Nguyen, age 5. Hi my name is James Ngyuen and I am 5 years old. I made this movie it's about birds. And the birds explodes. Bam! Kapow! Whoosh! I'm a moviehead! Which means I like movies! I like making movies more! This movie called Birdemic: Shock and Terror is about a guy named Rod and this girl named Natalie and these birds explode. Bam! Kapow! Whoosh! I hope you watch my movie! It's birdtastic!

Has the worst sound editing I've ever heard, some of the worst acting ever committed to film, and the special effects are an abortion. Funny once but after you see the birds superglued over the film stock it becomes sad. I know it may sound awesome but trust me, this is a gigantic piece of shit. Also the plot doesn't make any sense and what Victoria's Secret model dates a tech salesman? Probably the biggest waste of 10 grand ever.

This is an extraordinary movie. The lead actor is so bad at acting he's not even capable of walking normally. I will remember the jarring first-attack sequence for the rest of my life. James Nguyen probably expected this movie to fade away into obscurity but little did he know Birdemic: Shock and Terror would become a watershed moment in a long history of horrible movies. Remarkable and worth watching. Just as funny as The Room.

You couldn't watch this more than once, unlike some other infamous bad films. Like The Birds it transitions from rom-com to horror film, but really suddenly and pathetically. It's painful to actually watch and listen to. Bits of it are absolutely hilarious though, like Nguyen's over-the-top environmental message, the ending, the man who lives in the forest, "Wow, what a great movie! An Inconvenient Truth!", and, of course, the bird (and fire!) animations.

The first half is the worst thing I have EVER seen, the second half starts out as the funniest thing I've ever seen but quickly degenerates back into tedium. I had a few laughs and for that I'm not giving this the zero I had intended on. On one hand this is easily the worst movie ever made, on the other, it's worth a watch with friends and alcohol.

I can't shake the feeling that we were never meant to see this. Every conceivable aspect of Birdemic is so poorly done that I can't imagine anyone involved thought it was fit to be screened in their basement. Say what you want about Manos, at least its filmmakers knew about white balance. The total lack of competence makes it impossible for me to enjoy. It's not so bad its funny; it's so bad that I feel like a jerk for laughing at a movie that makes most freshman student films look Oscar-worthy.

Death of cinema. The raping of the celluloid. A cinematic abortion of unimaginable proportions; Never has a director's lack of creativity or complete ineptitude filled me with such irrepressible anger - I literally experienced multiple muscle contractions over the course of this abomination. GODAWFUL acting, EMBARRASSING special effects and film history's WORST editing work easily earn this steaming pile of dung the title of worst movie ever made. Congratufuckinglations!

I'm glad that I watched the RiffTrax version. Otherwise finishing it would have been a truly daunting task. While the film itself is so bad it's fun (the special effects are glorious!), this massively inept dreck might just, objectively speaking, be the worst movie - nay, piece of content - that anybody have ever had the audacity to subject an audience to.

This is, quite simply, possibly the worst film I've seen in my entire life. Nguyen apparently tried to make a horror movie that would fuse his two favourite movies - Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. With no budget. And even less talent. I'm honestly not sure what's worse: the "acting", the script, the special effects, or the completely insane plot that's 45 minutes of awful romcom that suddenly does a 90-degree turn into awful horror movie.

Have you *seen* the 'special effects' involving the birds? Talk about pathetic. Anyway, this movie, when originally made, was called 'The Birds' by Alfred Hitchcock. ... And I didn't even like that version, so you can imagine what tripe I think this is. AWFUL acting, high school student films are better. The first half of the story can't even count for exposition, and the 'birds' don't attack until the second half. Is this the worst film I've ever seen? ... Thus far yes.

Truly horrible: a pointless, idiotic 1st half of meaningless filler shots and useless "character development" (characters as sketchy as it gets, awful acting; Moore's the only one trying) + a 2nd half of utterly nonsensical "action", the most ridiculous "effects" ever and an inexplicable resolution + nonexistent technical qualities (how to hold a camera, what's a boom mic) + not-so-subtle environmental preaching. So horrible it would've been profoundly sad if it wasn't unintentionally hilarious.

It's like when everyone was laughing at William Hung but it was kind of sad that he didn't realize why he was getting attention. Then he released an album and everyone kind of realized he wasn't necessarily in on the joke and thought it was for real. Well we did it again. There is a sequel to this pile of crap. And all because we wanted to laugh at ineptitude.

I think this sets the standard as the absolute worst a feature length film can be. Between the stupid, pointless, implausible story, the clearly-never-acted-before lead actor, the tedious shot lengths as the director lingers on everything. Even the credits look like the default font on microsoft word. And why would anyone make a horror movie about a type of creature they do not have the means to actually depict on screen?! If those are the best birds you can do, DON'T MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT BIRDS!

Normally, this so-bad-its-good genre trash is redeemed by a kind of "Noble Savage" creative naiveté, where the sheer good intentions of the intent salvage its disastrous final product. But in this case, director/writer James Nguyen seems to be so clearly a douchebag, I simply can't get behind this unawares failed attempt to immortalize his douchebaggery on film.

RiffTrax 60. Took almost an hour to even begin. The only bright light was how attractive Whitney Moore is. Terrible pauses between dialog. Terrible editing with extra useless extended scenes like car parking. Stupid character decisions, dialog, trigger control, everything. Terrible effects. Solrpnrs. Not even bad funny. It's not like it's impossible to make a good horror film about birds. Fav scene: Whitney Moore in lingerie.

Oddly enough the film's first half- a preposterously normal romance between an environmentalist tech millionaire and world-famous supermodel- is far more entertaining than the eventual attempted monster movie portion which follows, which largely consists of repetitive scenes of people wandering around and dodging poorly rendered birds.

Gets every part of the process wrong. Notably -There must have been one camera with its ISO locked-off three stops too high, unchecked for the entire production. Audio was recorded straight into the camera mic without compensation for wind/ actors blocking. This also explains the choppy shot to shot audio which occasionally drops out completely to silence. I guess the upside is there wasn't a boom to drop into shot, which would have happened. Arbitrarily drilling deep into the eco-theme..fuck

An excercise in total control by writer/director/producer James Nguyen, with many of the same faults as another familiar low-budget clown, Hal Warren. Birdemic, with it's horrid acting, shockingly poor script and film quality, and it's nearly non-stop promotion of eco-friendly ideologies, achieves the dubious honor of being one of the worst films ever made.

Well, masterpiece or mindfuck, this will leave its mark on your view of what a movie is and should be. It'll twist and turn everything you hold dear in cinema and leave an unidentifiable goo. There's mostly two ways you can go out of this: broken, beat and scarred, no faith left in humanity...or just incredibly modest and grateful, aching for at least half-decent entertainment...like high-school musical.

I feel obligated to rank it at zero based solely on the technical ineptitude and the fact that it somehow manages to do every single thing wrong. Yet another thing to blame on Global Warming; this movie. I'll sum up the movie's logic with this: birds explode whenever they nose dive an object like a Molotov cocktail. You now know what you're getting into. Whitney Moore is pretty hot though and pulled off her action scenes better than the others. [Rifftrax makes good on this one; even managing to handle the awkward opening half hour where nothing but parking happens. Still I almost felt they were like, "why bother" with half the stuff.]

Not as good as The Room, perhaps, but close. It is the "There Will Be Blood" to The Room's "No Country For Old Men." It is a near masterpiece. It reaches epic heights. The acting is phenomenal, almost on par with a mannequin in front of a thrift shop. With special effects as good as Star Wars (the Bollywood version) and a script crafted with the utmost delicacy (monkey typing), Birdemic is and will always be one of the greats. An instantaneous classic and an absolute must-watch. (that is true)

How bad are the special effects of BIRDEMIC, you might ask? If I were to fling a rubber chicken at you, it would not be much less convincing than the CGI here. But BIRDEMIC's wretchedness extends far beyond that: the sound is murky and varies drastically from shot to shot, the imagery is blurry and flat, the acting is monstrously inept (the worst death scene I've ever seen), and the writing and directing show not even an accidental trace of skill. The credits music is passable. That's the good.

There are some films that are bad. There are other films that are so bad they a lot of people find them enjoyable. Then there are films that are so bad that they are irredeemable. This film falls into the 3rd category but I liked it anyway. I suppose in the same way that people just clicked with The Room and I loathed it so have I clicked with this. It's so hopelessly inept that I have developed a sort of fondness from the exploding birds to the most incompetent sound I have ever heard

What I will give Birdemic is that it sort of invented a new subgenre of so-bad-it's-good (and I'm not sure it's had any successors). The problem is that it's the least entertaining of those subgenres. It's a lot more fun to talk about than it is to watch, so it's worth seeing once just to gain understanding of the references your schlockier and/or geekier friends are making (which, as of this writing at least, are still less played out than the ones from The Room).
