Birds, Orphans and Fools

Yowza! Form is rugged (mostly hand-held and with natural lighting) and content a fanciful flourish of creativity. Kind of in the vein of Chytilova's "Daisies" and perhaps a nod to hippie culture, it's a psychedelic ride where half the time you have no clue what's going on as three vicenarians (supposedly orphaned in WWII) kid about for nearly the entire length of the film. It is artful and spectacular.

Inspired and inspiring. Watch it on your birthday!

Hippie-dippie nonsense. Christians, and Catholics in particular, will not like its mockery of their faith.

Estreava há exatos 50 anos na Checoslováquia. Contundente alegoria política sobre a história Tcheca nos anos 60, sobretudo o período da Primavera de Praga e o que aconteceu depois com seu fim. Se eu não conhecesse as alegorias políticas que se faziam no Brasil dessa mesma época, talvez eu achasse o filme de Jakubisko mais brilhante do que realmente achei. BlurayRip no MakingOff.

i simply can't believe this film exists

I like a little humour with my surrealism, so this was a pretty good watch for the bulk of its running time. Speaking as an outsider, I wish Jakubisko had spelled out his allegory a bit more clearly, because it ends up dragging the film down. Magdaléna Vášáryová is breathtaking.

‎"To je socha Štefánika." "Tu sa narodil?" "Nie, tu zomrel. Zostrelili mu lietadlo. My sme boli vždy bohatá rodina." "To bol tvoj otec?" "Áno. Ale nikdy som ho nevidel. Zostala mi po ?om iba socha."

Well, I can honestly say I've never seen a film like this before.
