Birth of the Dragon

It's most interesting feature is its portrayal of Lee - maybe the first film to not completely romanticize him. The first half highlights the extreme cockiness you could always see signs of in his films and interviews & paints him - quite plausibly - as kind of a smug jerk in need of a taking down from a humble monk. No doubt this alienated his fanbase even though the film says he learned a lesson. The problem is there's no real sign he's changed at all. He just seems to think he's more awesome.

This is the first new Bruce Lee movie in quite some time, and it did not disappoint. It shows us a young arrogant Bruce Lee just coming up. The fight with Wong Jack Man was a classic Kung Fu display of fluid skills. It also has great lessons in respect and humility. Philip Ng did a great job as Bruce Lee, but Yu Xia was the stand out as the charismatic Wong Jack Man. It also had the look and feel of a 70's film which gave it a bit of film noir charm. Genre fans will appreciate this one.

Don't let the hype fool you. The real story here doesn't revolve around Bruce Lee but one of his students, a fictional White Savior played by Billy Magnussen. The movie has some good fighting action, but it has a confusing flow because its main character only plays a tertiary role in the set-pieces, and the viewer can't relate to the characters' dilemmas. YouTube the fight scenes and skip the rest.

This movie is complete garbage. Using the Bruce Lee name to make a shitty Karate Kid remake filled with bullshit dialogue that has no basis in fact or realism. Also why is the name of the movie even "Birth of the Dragon" when he is only portrayed as a one dimensional side character, now it is a know fact that Bruce was an arrogant prick to a lot of people and I personally think is a bit over rated as a Martial Artist but even I think this was too much...

Thus, Birth of the Dragon unexpectedly illustrates some important spiritual truths in a story that otherwise plays fast and loose with the real battle between Bruce Lee and Wong Jack Man.
