Francesca and Walter are two-bit criminals in Northern Italy, and, in an effort to avoid the police, Francesca joins a group of women rice workers. She meets the voluptuous peasant rice worker, Silvana, and the soon-to-be-discharged soldier, Marco. Walter follows her to the rice fields, and the four characters become involved in a complex plot involving robbery, love, and murder. (imdb)

The combination of neorealism with noir works surprisingly well, because they complement each other. The neorealist aspects give the movie room to breath by showing the larger world beside the 4 main characters. While the noir aspects gives the plot momentum.

Neorealist sort-of-erotica with all the sneering and acting of a WWE event. At least De Santis takes cinema seriously as a moving art form, so if you concentrate on the images alone, you'll find working class kitsch elevated to something sensual and tactile. Still, the overly determined blocking is hilarious at times.

Neorealism and noir. The two aspects don't actually blend all that much, but they do complement each other and make the film stronger as a whole. The neorealist setting of post war labour and food supply is really well executed, mixing hope and strength and squalor very naturally, and by taking a back seat in the plot department it actually gives the film the opportunity to make some rather overt commentary without ever feeling preachy or melodramatic about it.
