Grim and bloody tale of plagues and witchcraft set in 1348 England. Sean Bean is typically solemn and severe as the Christian soldier leading a group of mercenaries on a quest to capture an alleged necromancer. Pretty authentic to the Medieval period, everyone and everything is absolutely filthy, and the corpses get stacked up pretty high by the end. The brief epilogue is the nasty little cherry on top of this bleak concoction.

Whoever marketed this as a horror movie needs to return to his (her) job sweeping floors at McDonald's. Medieval realism at its best. No pearly white teeth, no Irish Spring-fresh hair, no iron-pressed bodkins.

I enjoyed this. "Black Death" sticks to the moral gray areas, suggesting no right or wrong, just desperation and what it drives people to do. Too many films give an uncomplicated ethical lesson on what is good instead of forcing an audience to confront themselves. Buried in this period piece (behind some gore, moderate tension and a few laughable lines) is the same question posed by other, recognizably superior, films like "Apocalypse Now": How will man rationalize his crimes?

I love Sean Bean and found the movie's violence to be impressively beyond the pale, but it was still ultimately a fairly disposable experience.

Black Death delivers the fire and brimstone violence its subject matter warrants, while posing some interesting questions of faith and religion.

Disappointing in that it fails to really capitalize on the apocalyptic nature of the plague, and all the action is shot in that mid-2000's/early 2010's shakycam style. Bean is on autopilot and I'm not a fan of Redmayne, although Bean's death is the most bananas out of all his on-screen ones I've seen. The concluding epilogue seemed like it was from a much better film and raises the score by several points.

I liked the idea of one man crusade amongst the Black Death. A bit like Darth Vader character. There was also interesting lining between fantasy and reality. Unfortunately the director did not get anything nice out of the premises. The haze village in the end was also a big letdown.

Surprisingly effective. Heavily influenced by decades of (especially British) Horror, the most obvious points of reference being Witchfinder General and The Wicker Man. Shame about the shaky cam in the film's action sequences but fortunately these are few and far between.

Better than i thought , in fact i enjoyed it. Black Death manages to capture a realistic and gritty feel which i liked very much. The plot takes a few turns in the end which can be rather surprising. I don't think that the movie is religious at all but a very clever effort to look at the human nature when confronted with something unexplainable. In the end, Black Death is very well directed and executed. Definitely underrated.

One of the most engrossing recreations of medieval europe I've ever seen. Excellent acting and a thought provoking story about the role of religion in people's lives. Great pacing and a strong ending. Sean Bean is excellent, as usual. Note: this is not a horror film, it is a drama.

While the premise being interesting, the film itself fails overall in its execution. It all felt a bit rushed, especially the second half. A good try, just could have been a lot better.

If I may ask: Where was the horror in this movie? It was only horror to watch it. An odd story which is not really entertaining but boring. There should have been more of David Warner. No worries if you miss it.

Underwhelming medieval period piece with a slow narrative that doesn't really go anywhere for the first 45 minutes. Drab visuals, shaky camera-work and intrusive music don't help, either. Attempts to make some comment about religion towards the end, but it's all so vague I wasn't really sure what the point was (or maybe I was just past caring).

Despite an effectively bleak, grimy atmosphere, and some interesting, if somewhat incoherent commentary on Christian morals, this Wicker Man in the swamp is ultimately let down by amateur filmmaking and its small budget.

Deliberate and moody, BLACK DEATH mostly eschews violence and sorcery in favor of deep psychological chills. The film is unexpectedly thoughful, and inspires a gnawing (and much more horrific) uncertainty about the nature of faith, justice, and truth.

Aside from having bean in a lead role and a half-baked twist ending, this movie ends up being horribly drab. Bubonic plague and knights kicking butt always make for something interesting, but I don't know how this one went wrong.

Guess what? S.Bean's character dies at some point (as expected thus this isn't spoiler, is it?). Not really bad but not great either. Guy who had camera was probably drunk since there are many shaky scenes whose don't have real sense/effect on ambient. Still worth a watch if there's nothing better.

Attempts without complete success to convey the irrationality and fear that must have gripped the age. The dialogue was a little too anachronistic, and the shaky camerawork and artificial colour filtering were unnecessary annoyances. Amusingly attempts to show that violence and madness were the norm on all sides, but the narrative had a strangely clunky quality about it, so that, overall, the movie fails to convey a sense of verisimilitude.

Certainly an odd time-period choice for a horror film but oddly enough Christopher Smith manages to deliver an entertaining film. Though horror isn't my genre of preference the film's lead, Sean Bean, really does have a captivating role. The sheer tenacity of the of the religious devotion of him and (most) of his men really makes the film better than the average horror flick. Worth a watch.

It was like a hour and a half episode of game of thrones, but then a bad one, where nothing much happens and with a lot of bad acting. They could have atleast put some cool stuff in the script like dragons or wizards or somethng but noooo, it was only bout black death...plague... in a village... and people walking... wait.. that was the entire movie? Yawn.

Like a 14th century version of the original 'Wicker Man' (not the one about bees), only with Sean Bean playing, well, that guy he played in 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Game of Thrones'. Nothing is terrible, but it is oddly unaffecting - mildly interesting rather than compelling or truly intriguing.

I was thoroughly enjoying the first half, but I have a soft spot for this type of gritty medieval misery so I am a bit biased. Turns into a more run-of-the-mill Wicker Man-y thriller, which took some wind out of its sails. The dark ending left me with a wicked grin again. Cool cast, and it was a nice surprise to see some of mah fellow Dutchies pop up.

Fairly original film with a commentary on religious superstition but it lacks ambition. The twist ending leaves this 'Um... So what?" feeling. Production values are good. Cinematography is gritty and realistic, but shaky cam is distracting. It's worth seeing for those interested in genre films.

Woefully flat characters in the drab Earthtoned medieval setting that has become so beloved to low budget directors. For a movie tackling period horror, it lacks the grit or esoteric charm needed to be memorable (see Ravenous for how to do period horror right). Cumbersome anachronistic dialogue, pale boring characters and the inability to get the plot rolling within the first hour make this one to skip.

It's not a movie about knights in shining armor battling evil and saving the kingdom. Only two characters will keep you invested in this gore-filled, blood-spattered film with pretty bad cinematography. Still, the plot makes for a very deep, very dark exploration of religion and the effects it has had on us. Be prepared for some deep personal thinking and a strong reflection on your own religious views after it's over.
