Everyone involved is very flawed but they're also very sympathetic which helps the film work against the natural tendency to pick a side when watching that kind of conflict. That helps make for a richer experience where the issues involved, both the tribal issues in the specific instance and the general issues of trust and inequality, can get highlighted.
