In between the nonstop somber string music scoring EVERY SINGLE MOMENT nothing at all happens and it takes a certain panache to have several people getting blown away, hookers strangled , and still feel like nothing happened. Adam Scott should be barred from being in anything but comedy, his presence takes you out of every single thing, which in this case isn't such a bad thing.

Takes the most superficial plot-based elements from various all-time gangster/Crime films and uses them to string together a Greatest Hits reel of derivative moments. Some people get murdered. Some agent is corrupt. Some guy is violently insane and everyone is afraid of him. You know the drill. At every turn it's imitating a moment from another more original movie. And so, Black Mass is a cinematic template that carries very little art, but a whole lot of testosterone.

Was it just me or did everyone look really weird in this film? I found it distracting. The acting was good, though. The film was nicely made, but it felt like it picked up a little too much from other, better films. It did feel a bit flat as it went on, and Bulger was just a horrible bastard, so I felt it was all just a bit too joyless. Not bad by any means, but temper your expectations.

Starts out promising enough, despite its familiarity, before it becomes numbingly repetitive. Saddled with a listless plot, the film relies on countless characters interactions for dramatic credibility, yet none of the characters are fleshed out enough for us to care about what happens to them. Even Depp's much lauded performance becomes overbearing - cold and menacing at first, until it eventually fizzles down along with the script. Swing and a miss.

Johnny Depp provides an excellent performance in some creepy-looking makeup, and Whitey's story is a compelling one, but Black Mass doesn't pull it together enough to make it anywhere near the top tier of gangster movies that this believes it belongs to.

Pretty much your typical, run of the mill, by the numbers Boston set gangster movie. The problem (maybe?) is that it tried too hard to stay biographical. In real life most criminals aren't really that interesting. We fictionalize them, romanticize them and sometimes even love to root for the bad guy but Black Mass did none of these things. They hit all the major bullet points but really nothing stood out as memorable. No real depth in the characters or the acting. Again, very cookie cutter.

An ugly, unoriginal, obscenely derivative wanna-be mob epic about an unpleasant, one-note, no-big-deal hood who would have accounted for maybe a scene or two as a supporting thug in GOODFELLAS. Man, oh, man, does this movie want to be a big deal, and man, oh, man, is it uninteresting and bland, with cruddy performances abounding and a general sense of design by committee. If you must watch, see how long you can last before the phony Boston accents give you a headache.

Johnny Depp delivers one of his best performances in years as the infamous criminal Whitey Bulger, but even that fails to instill enough personality into what is a far too familiar and unimpressive gangster picture. With its one-note characters and underutilized plot threads, this film never elevates above par for the course.

Black Mass is a thrilling tale of loyalty, deceit, and one very, very interesting mobster: Whitey Bulger. Johnny Depp turns in his best performance in a long time, he's supported wonderfully by the likes of Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, and Corey Stoll, and the film has a rare ability to make you both fear and sympathize with its gangster protagonist. Unless you're tired of Boston-set gangster movies, Black Mass is worth seeing.

Viewed September 21, 2015. The worst kind of perfunctory, by-the-numbers filmmaking, where apparently all gangster cinema has to offer is the same types of beatings and executions over and over for two bland hours. A series of meaningless close-ups and decent actors doing embarrassing Boston accents. It's not really bad, per se, but it never comes close to resembling anything good.

I might have been sleepy from too much boxed lunch meat, but for Christs sake this movie got boring fast. Points for Depp who is good in his first role that didn't make me think of Jack Sparrow in years, and the supporting cast is mostly fine. I just didn't give a shit about anyone or anything after about 45 minutes.

I don't think it redefines the wheel in any way, but I dug Depp in the role (great performance, won't and shouldn't win awards though), and for the most part I was engaged. It dragged a little bit here and there, but it covered a fair bit of ground. Could have explored certain parts of Bulger's life better, but it's a completely solid gangster flick.

Considering the stellar cast and a promising story with potential, it's a shame how this movie turned up. The whole thing basically feels a like a mini-series stitched up for the big screen. Depp is eerie and all, but it's just too hard to see through his weird make up. Maybe it'd be a better idea to cast an actual blue-eyed blonde Southie from Boston, like Matt FUCKING Damon? Ever thought of that geniuses?

I'm not going to call Depp's performance revolutionary, or even among the best of the year at this point, but I thought Black Mass was an excellent movie, very well put-together (aside from, admittedly, some obvious whitewashing of certain intra-FBI elements), entertaining, and Depp's performance was strong and stood out even among the very good cast. Who'd have thought that when you cast Dakota Johnson in a role that's more than "being banged by a boring male character", she could deliver?

The filmmakers clearly made a decision to be unrelentingly grim and to include no likeable characters, but nor are they very interesting, Depp's protagonist in particular remaining quite enigmatic (and the family scenes add very little in this regard). As a result, the narrative is forced to drag the viewer along in fatalistic manner until the unexciting and inevitable conclusion. To so obviously imitate famous scenes from prior movies seems strange, and the motive for doing so remains unclear.

Nice to see Depp back to excellent form in a very watchable crime biography. I knew little of Bulger before the movie so it might have been more interesting to me than someone who knows most of the story. I can never tell if faux Boston accents are bad or not. They almost always sound bad at first but end up growing on me.

It was an amazing transformation for Johnny Depp to portray the cold blooded killer & vicious gangster. His performance seemed credible & was quite chilling. It pulls no punches to reveal the horrendous crimes & hinted at the twisted arrangement with the FBI that allowed the psychopathic criminals to thrive. Joel Edgerton, Julianna Nicholson & Juno Temple were also good. An extremely disturbing portrayal of events, but I suspect the real truth would be even more unnerving had it been revealed.

The gangster movie where nothing happens. I must have checked my watch at least two dozen times. After two hours, what do we learn about the saga of Whitey Bulger? Not a damn thing. 60 minutes' piece on him was infinitely more interesting. This was just...bland...mediocre, definitely not worth my money or time. Before reviewing a film I didn't like, I try to play devil's advocate and say to myself: "I liked the part when...", but I honestly can't think of a single memorable moment.

I'm sure they took liberties with the story, but "Black Mass" is a non-fiction gangster movie in a genre that has been filled to the brim with spectacularly awesome fictional material. And I've never been one to buy into the idea that the truth is stranger than fiction. As such, it's a misappropriation of sorts, why get pretty boy Depp to play your balding, rather unattractive Bulger? It's decent, it's good, but it's a little unmemorable compared to the likes of "Goodfellas" and "Casino."

Black Mass is the compelling & shocking true story of infamous Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. I'm unaware of how fabricated this film may or may not be. But it feels more conscious of bullet pointing and ticking off 'true' events as apposed to trying to be as entertaining as possible. Johnny Depp gives an impressively menacing performance. So much so that I forgot who was behind the distracting makeup. Otherwise the promising supporting cast underwhelms and overall I wanted & expected much more.

With no background knowledge, I was going to review this by rambling about Depp's oversized contact lenses & how it was a pretty close Departed remake, until the end credits rolled & you find the damn thing's true. It really is a slight deviation from the Departed's script, sharing that brilliant career yin and yang concept. Has splotches of Goodfellas as well, with characters less robust and personable, more limp & strangled. Needless to say, you've seen this film in one form or another.

It's not fair to compare this to Goodfellas, because that movie worked really hard (and was successful) at showing what's appealing about the mob life in the first place. This is really just a character study of one sick man, and systemic failures of the government that allowed him to prosper. Good performances and a really amazing (basically) true story are its strengths. Never reached its potential though, because despite the insane shit happening, it found a way to frequently be too slow.

I enjoy these type of movies, especially biopics. What I will say is the acting was great, especially Edgerton and Depp as they both seemed to have a lot of fun with this. While the movie is very polished and produced very well from a visuals perspective, there is nothing unique about it. It lacks creativity and the script doesn't seem to dig deep enough into the characters and their backgrounds. It fails to differ itself from other crime movies and can get lost in the cliché. Allegations of a pedestrian screenplay and direction are not unfounded; and admittedly are largely deserved. But nothing here is bad, perhaps except Cumberatch's dodgy accent/phoned-in performance combo. Depp is fantastic. Possibly the worst movie score I've ever heard in my life. So overbearing and unneeded that it became very distracting. It seemed like they tried to fit in too much into too small a run time and thus you end up with a lot of underdeveloped plot lines and characters that don't really make sense like the Juno Temple scenes -- I was like why are you murdering her exactly? It shines when it wants to, it throws some good dirty punches to anyone trying to cheer Whitey Bulger on, but it loses its audience by a narrative split that divides attention to the loss of sense of drama and nothing is really gained. Too slow to be a thriller on par with the fictional 'The Departed' and the script can't deliver more than solemn, if tense executions. Johnny Depp can act though.

Can't decide if it wants to be Goodfellas or it wants to be a horror movie. Depp's Bulger feels demonic at times and some of those executions are downright terrifying (the title, while functioning as a good double pun, sounds like a demonic horror movie). But it would have done well to pick an attitude and stick with it - Is Bulger a demon from another plane or is he a kingpin reeling in the dough?

Depp puts in a good turn as the menacing lead (the "I thought it was a family secret" moment is excellent), but while Bulger's biography is well-paced and structured, there's nothing unique or spectacular to separate it from other similar gangster movies; it covers all the bases but never soars high or digs deep. Instead, it's Edgerton's slimy FBI agent that steals the show, particularly in the final act as he starts to flounder in his falsities. A better "cop" flick than a "robber" one.
