Black Mother

a meditative inside look at collective identity that I'm not sure how to be in the mood for, but is nonetheless beautiful and fascinating. I think the editing here is more audacious than Field, and there's some great flourishes here. but I think I am just more drawn to the subjects in his previous film, by my own personal preference. that said, this is a great project, and I can't wait for what Khalik Allah does next.

Fascinating, dissociative portrait of Jamaica and its people almost by definition lacks thrust or cohesion - it's difficult to judge how well or calculated Allah's vision is being executed here, but it's fun sticking around and trying to work it out - at its best when capturing the seedy milieu of sex workers, as well as a quietly touching sequence involving the end of life moments of an elderly grandfather.
