Wants for a strong central character off of which to bounce its ideas about religion and ethics, but nonetheless an unusually thoughtful and serious film examining the relationship between missionaries and their charges. Its portrayal of the Quebecois natives may not be precisely authentic, but it does treat them far more humanely and respectfully than most films of this ilk. I'm a sucker for films about the unconquered wilderness, and this is a strong entrant in that field.

Though an effort was made, I still felt the natives in this movie were more often than not portrayed as having a very European flavored mindset. I especially felt that the scenes in the Iroquois fort could have been handled much better.

As I see it, a simple and evocative tale about trust.

At times great filmmaking, at others the lack of a solid anchor, both thematically and character-wise, leaves it to drift through painfully tedious scenes. The thin, often stereotypical, portrayals it gives of its subjects weigh it down as well, but there moments of merit as well. It seems like a decent way to spark discussion, but, to be of interest, the content of the discussion would have little to do with what happens in the film.

Amazing cinematography highlights an important and oft-neglected subject. Marred by gratuitous sex scenes. But not the anti-Christian movie I was expecting.

Far better than Dances with Wolves.

The pointlessness of religion. Not sure about you but I don't need a movie to explain that! Also, indigenous people with prophetic dreams? If you're going to make out that some ethnicities have actual magical abilities then go full racist fantasy like some Stephen King shite! I do like an adventurous journey though.
