Mike Binder pulls off a miracle in that he manages to draw out of Kevin Costner a non-cringeworthy performance. Octavia Spencer is, of course, delightful.

Sappy melodramatic liberal crap.

Finally got to this one. The child actress did a great job. Also, Costner and Octavia Spencer brought excellent performances.

Something is missing from this. It's supposed to be a serious matter, but the dramatic tension that this story should have, and the courtroom sessions could have, were completely absent. Costner did good, and little Estell was very charming, but it's still a mess and barely comes through. *Okay

A story about a custody battle that progressively gets messier. At stake is the future of an innocent little girl. Costner effectively plays the grieving survivor & protective grandfather. That he is white & she is black seems to have entirely too much bearing on the matter. One good line from his lawyer made me belly laugh pretty hard. Some courtroom drama. A tense ending & a good conclusion. A few turbulent & sweet moments.

Its not bad but also not good either. It has some solid points and scores and some messy parts. A average social message flick. Great acting.
