Blackbeard's Ghost

This was always on at my grandad's house when I was younger, I remembered it as being quite fun. Young me was right, it's a blast.

Ustinov is a blast as the infamous pirate. Formula Disney comedy given a lift via a trenchant script that gets most of its humor from good characters rather than the usual carload of hokey special FX.

Not merely a Disneyfied version of a march darker and deeper book, but casting Peter Ustinov as Blackbeard pushed it even farther from the source material. That said, Freder still likes this one a lot . . . everyone is just out to have some fun, and it rubs off on the audience. Wish that Disney's DVD release treated this one with a little bit of respect; but no, it's just a straight port of the VHS version.

An absolute blast from the past! One of my very favourite films as a kid, it still retains a high amount of charm and fat chunk of fun! Peter Ustinov is awesome as a drunkard Blackbeard.

Not bad.

Hilarious! Great old-fashioned family film. With pirates!
