Dry and bold, how I like my sci-fi. I want to walk around in a sweaty leather duster with the collar popped up like a blade runner and just be totally hounded and made fun of while listening to that score to protect me. Jared Leto fucked several appliances to get into the mind of his gimmicky character.

I loved, loved, loved the first scene, and I thought that Villeneuve's direction was more than able to sustain the leisurely pacing throughout. Moreover, Gosling was quite perfectly cast, as was Armas. However, the scenes with Leto and those with and pertaining to Ford's character I wasn't very happy with, and I found the script rather underwhelming as a whole. Nonetheless, it's a movie I can see myself rewatching repeatedly in order to soak up it's atmosphere and delicious visuals.

Probably one of the best sci/fis of the 2010s, and one of the best sequels ever made. Gosling is truly magnetic and made for the role, and I would argue that the whole cast is pretty superb. Beautiful cinematography, amazing visual effects and production design, good directing, and good writing. Everything that was done so well about the first installment is done just as well here, and in the end, this recaptures the feel of the original very well. Definitely one of this years best.

An obvious labor of love from Villeneuve. Really one of the most faithful sequels in spirit since Aliens or maybe Transformers: Dark of the Moon which used meticulous effort to maintain the thoroughly exasperating nature as the previous entries. Between this and Sicario I desperately want Denis to shelve his Dune project long enough to put out a film adaptation of the SNES game Shadowrun.

The high rating is for the transcendent visuals and sound. I found the story to be painfully misguided at times, despite the heavy presence of theme. What on earth were they doing with Leto's character? I appreciate the careful, meditative pacing, but try to turn off your brain as much as you can. This strange combo of thoughtful aesthetic and shallow narrative created one of the most baffling experiences I've had in the theater all year.

Visually its the best looking since Fury Road, sequences of absolute magnitude are just lined up one after the other. World building sci-fi that honors its predecessor, shines on it's own terms and has impressive performances from Gosling and Armas. Dying to jump back into Villeneuve's vision again and again.

Blade Runner 2049 serves as both it's own contained film and as an incredibly satisfying sequel to one of my favourite films ever. Denis Villeneuve stepping into the shoes of Ridley Scott feels both seamlessly familiar yet refreshingly new and together with cinematographer Roger Deakins they have crafted a truly spectacular and thought provoking cinematic experience. Ryan Gosling gives an impressive leading performance and there are many fan pleasing touches and unexpected surprises throughout.

Villeneuve's slow, moody, ambient-drenched handling of the material is exactly what I was hoping for. A sequel not simply offering a dumbed down do-over but actually building on what came before without becoming insufferably wink-nudge-y. Interesting themes, strong acting, gorgeous sets and effective reveals.

After waiting more than three decades for real-world technology to catch up with that of the Blade Runner universe, Ridley Scott is finally able to move forward with the production of this long-awaited sequel upon discovering that Ryan Gosling is, in fact, the emotionless Replicant he'd been looking for to play K. It was doubly fun to learn that in the dark days of a dying Earth, Seiko watches still sell enough to ensure the corporation can maintain a branch office in downtown Los Angeles.

Another page has been turned in Sequel Madness, an era where humans uncover old artifacts and reanimate them to the best of their abilities, mostly with negative results. However, this time, somewhat remarkably, Blade Runner's world has been successfully revivified. What I thought was dead is alive. Cool. The narrative stumbles, bogged down by nostalgic moments and some clumsy melodrama, but it sticks to its hard sci-fi guns, and in spite of its faults, the story is...good. I liked this.

Lacks the ambiguity that made the original great. There's never much mystery about what's going to happen, the dialogue is dull and must be mystifying to anyone unfamiliar with the first one, the characters' motivations are unengaging and the philosophizing is shallow. There's some great visuals and plenty of Sony product placement in case you forget who distributed the flick.

Conflicted about this one. It's a solid sci-fi flick that stands above the cookie-cutter blockbusters of today. It is patient and methodical, and doesn't bombard you with pointless action. It nails the visual aesthetics and the moody, ambient OST. But neither the characters nor the plot leave a lasting impression. There are no stand-out/memorable performances, and the story, for all its added complexities, never feels fresh. If not for its connection to BR, not sure it stands the test of time.

Absolutely incredible. Thematically and stylistically consistent with Scotts masterpiece, but also something special in its own right. The pacing and editing are so beautifully measured and deliberate. The whole film; its concepts, characters and created world are given the time they need to breathe and to intensify. Mix in a perfectly cast Gosling, a badass Sylvia Hoeks, jaw dropping visuals and sound, and this is 2017's best. Way beyond expectations and all credit to Villeneuve.

the original's themes are there: life, soul, personality, purpose, where does it begin? who qualifies? who is the AI-girlfriend of a bio-engineered person? what does their "love" mean? it's the "replicant-question" reduced even further, an ingenious way to elaborate on the original. and then they pull a complete 180 with the miracle child shit, which is as relevant to BR's mythos as the "deckard=replicant" ramblings of an old madman. the execution is still flawless, so...ugh...whatever.

Kudos to the filmmakers who don't conform to modern ideas of a hit film & fill this with a lot of action. As in the original, the focus remains on playing with the idea of what constitutes a person, but the variations here are fresh, inverting the by-now common sci-fi trope by having a replicant begin to discover that they might, in fact, be "human". As before, the pacing remains slow enough to deter the average movie goer, but it's filled with new beautiful images to gaze at & ponder its ideas

I had qualms about a lack of a good plot backbone in the first one (which I watched recently before watching this and I think that helped) and then this one delivered on that front. It's fascinating both visually and thematically and it has some great moments peppered throughout. It was a teensy bit long and the little voiceover reminders etc. annoyed me a tad but very impressed overall.

*RR* Whether it be my general distaste for the original, or my disposition on the particular night I saw it, my initial reaction to "Blade Runner 2049" was not a positive one, to say the least. But now, with the benefit of having the first film fresh in my mind, I can safely say that "2049" is not just a good film, but a great one, a movie with a great many observations on what it means to be human, told through spellbinding visuals, a haunting score, and stellar performances.

I love Blade Runner. This is a respectful & finely crafted loveletter to it. Takes great care in conjuring amazing audiovisual homages to it but lacks both stylistic & character nuance that gave it depth. There were so many creative visions, contradictory yet complementary behind the original it became immune to simplification & overstatement. This is the opposite & feels like a very very good fan film. Weirdly enough Wong's 2046 is a better Blade Runner sequel than Villeneuve's 2049.

The movie strikes a perfect balance between being original and paying tribute (unlike, say Star Wars movies for example). They evolved the Blade Runner setting impressively and set out a convincing, strong story. Visually it was pretty special together with all-around excellent acting and a great variation of the instrumental soundtrack of the original. I found the presence of Ford a bit superfluous but it was not that much of a drag. I think we can trust Villeneuve even with Clockwork Orange 2.

I can't believe Denis Villeneuve managed to make a sequel to fucking Blade Runner that not only matches up to the original, but actually complements it and elevates it. Smartly, Blade Runner 2049 refuses to relitigate the same questions and themes the original raised, instead opting to ask new and exciting questions. It subverts nostalgia in really intelligent and intriguing ways. This is absolutely my favorite film of 2017 and probably the best sequel to any movie since Fury Road.

Unquestionably gorgeous and powerfully atypical, but ultimately disappointing due to a questionable plot with too many unnecessary elements. Aesthetically & audiovisually, it's spectacular, but the story I was less keen on. The original is low-key noir, whereas 2049 escalates the plot into an apocalyptic crescendo that raises the stakes but feels out of place in a Blade Runner film. The dialogue & visual metaphors about machines, souls & miracles felt heavy-handed. Finally, Leto sucks and had Bowie lived another couple of years to play that role my score would be 10 points higher. All that said, 2049 is still great on its own merits.

Where the '82 film played with death & solipsism/memory with regard to what it meant to be human; BR49 wonders if these questions even matter. Like the original, the score & visuals are otherworldly & beautiful. A collapsed hedonic neon past given way to a broken, dusty dystopia. Humanity is simply gone. We're left to salvage hope from an AI bot and its/her replicant lover. 2049 did lack a Roy Batty; memorable lines to fill your soul with a surprising humanity. But BR49 is still a great film.

The very short list of great sci-fi sequels just got a bit longer. It's not without blemishes (a bit of terrible exposition and some weak plot points), but as a whole Villeneuve's daunting challenge has turned into an atmospheric, thought provoking, technically impressive and pleasingly mature tale in its own right.

Jaw-dropping in how impressively shot it is, in conjunction with the amazing music, that makes this futuristic setting feel so much like lost ancient times. However, this admirable reboot questions its own existence, as it simply serves as a convoluted and thoroughly extended continuation of the original (highlighting how succinct it always was) and spends a lot of time saying nothing. Certainly missing that Roy Batty warmth, this may appeal more to androids than humans.

One of the rare decades-later sequel that is a success, BR2049 expands upon the original but also works as a standalone movie. It is uniformly well acted, looks fantastic and has an in-your-face overbearing soundtrack that I liked. The overall story is ambiguous and thought provoking and doesn't give all the answers you want, but it does have a satisfying ending. Minimal but effective use of Harrison Ford as Deckard. My main criticisms are that the pacing is languid and it feels bloated at times

I don't much care for the original, this is streets ahead. At times feels a little overlong and/or wandering but is always visually arresting. I don't think the theater I was in could handle the POWAH of the musical score as the room was shaking constantly and the lighting fixtures rattled so loudly they sounded like they were going to pop off the walls and break.

First of all, I did really enjoy the film, especially the visuals, mood and pacing reminiscent of the original. Mainly I just wasn't sold on the central plot idea. We get the whole "androids are people too" thing. This was corny and unrealistic, if that word can be applied to a sci-fi movie. In addition, several things got old: that one heavy synth-bass effect strewn about, Gosling's tiny crooked smirk, and things like the Plain of Titanic Naked Statues. But honest, I still liked the movie.

the humanity of the original, ironically epitomised by roy, was endangered, dangerous and vital, charged with mortal fear and wonder, heroically attempting to shatter the film's omniscient apathy. villeneuve ramps up the latter threefold to extremely striking and alienating effect, but as per usual the emotional arc hiding underneath is pretty safe 'n tidy, and the whole endeavor is so shackled by self-awareness (sup PALE FIRE) that too many ingredients are used, few of them cooked long enough.

I was incredibly dubious to a sequel to my beloved sci-fi masterpiece. I was 10 or 11 when my dad showed me the original and I was stunned at its odd mix of future and past, the cold reality, and slick noir. I was so pleasantly pleased with the sequel capturing the look and feel that I can overlook some of the minor flaws (you would never know Ford is playing Deckard) because this is such a wonderfully filmed showcase. Gosling is fantastic and it solidifies Villeneuve as one of the elite.

I'm surprised to see this movie so well received. If it expands upon the established universe, I fail to see how. Plot was never the forte of the original, but this one starts with our hero heading off into misty nowhere to kill a farmer. Then bones, a messiah, an evil "God" and 'member berries to no end ('Member Edward Olmos?!? 'Member Rachel??). I re-watched this because the first time I saw it I was exhausted. This is so, so good. Deakins is an unsung hero, Villeneuve has made the most beautiful movie of the year; a masterclass to the point that every shot could be a picture on a wall. The isolation/emptiness of many of the environments/scenes echoes the loneliness that the characters feel. Contemplative, intelligent, not boring upon a re-watch, excellent music. If I was rating individual scenes, this would have a bunch of 10/10s, no question, thanks to some incredible visuals, sounds, turns, and Villeneuve's impeccable sense of tension and atmosphere (see the opening search, the horse discovery, Joshi vs. Luv, K and dreammaker Dr. Ana, the stunning final fight). Unfortunately, Leto's cliche villain and Deckard's return make for a less compelling and more tangential-feeling third act, at least plot and character-wise, keeping the film from perfection.

Probably bumped due to some of the aesthetic continuity, but the script and spoon-fed narrative made it painful to watch at times. Jared Leto playing a stock jrpg antagonist was especially bad. I enjoyed the ride and am completely enamored with Villeneuve's vision and pace. Yet the film's issues on mortality and the soul are packaged too neatly by the end - the film hints at an open wound, but wraps it up with a little too much care for its subject. So for me, the subplot with K and Joi was the heart of the movie. It left so much wanting, except for feeling. It is the ache that propels the film.

The rare sequel that retains what made the original great, while improving on the areas that needed improving. It's got the same moodiness, out-of-this-world visuals, and thoughtful ideas about what makes us human. But it really improved on story and pacing (though pacing was still a minor issue). Best of all, it took the now common trope of humans questioning their own humanity and flipped it on its head in a way that felt like the perfect extension of the ideas in the original.

It's not very often that a sequel is better than the original, and rarer still that a sequel coming out more than ten years later is even good. But this movie is as starkly futuristic as the original, it is just as grand, just as atmospheric, just as contemplative, but simply better. Every single part of this movie is superb, down to the existential and moral questions it poses. Even during the long slow periods that are frequent in this movie, I couldn't help but be glued to the screen.

2049 is slow, ponderous and has one of the worst scores in recent memory. It's also a motherfucking masterpiece, an Aliens-esque sequel that preserves the majesty of the original while expanding on its themes in spectacular fashion. Enough can't be said about Villeneuve's craftsmanship, as Blade Runner 2049 is a visual and audio treat for the senses. The story is brooding and methodical as it saunters at its own pace. Did Blade Runner need a sequel? Certainly not, but the expanded and long look at the original's themes are well done. How did he fashion a sequel that will, in the future, be studied alongside its original in film classes? I truly cannot overstate how good this is. Everything about it. A stunning masterpiece of photography and visual effects. Static frames, low-key scenes, loud action - virtually every shot is priceless, perfectly conceived and executed, as is the music. The script is very well-written too, although at almost three hours long one does get the feeling of "style over substance" here and there. The less connected to the original this is, the better, because the premise meant to connect this story with the original (and to set up a cinematic universe ...) is silly. They tried but failed to reconcile the otherwise grounded nature of the world with the farcical premise. The protagonist's detective work and personal life, not a brewing replicant rebellion, is what should have been this movie's focus. It's good but it's undermined by studio interference.

Reconstitutes events of the original film in the most tasteful manner possible, managing at once reverence and organic expansion. If the first is about the hubris of men to simulate their image, then here is the hubris shattered, in no small part by the hand (or womb) of women. Where it's similar to the original is the imprint of the arthouse on an ostensible action blockbuster. So we have a blade runner who, while seeing off a harmless old replicant, amazingly finds the remains of another who had clearly given birth. This is bad, apparently. At that point, the script completely fell apart and if it wasnt for the imdb synopsis, I wouldnt have had a clue what was happening. It seems more like A Day In The Life Of A Bladerunner and is nowhere near as WEIRD as the great SF movies... but damn, it knows what to do and it does it well. Bonus points for naming the protagonist Joseph K.

It works as both a very satisfying sequel and just a great sci-fi story of it's own.

Visually stunning. Needs to be seen in a theatre, although the sound did over power the speakers in my theatre, but I think that's because I think Zimmer has actually gone deaf so he doesn't know how loud his scores are. And unlike the last Star Wars he was in it didn't seem like they had to force Harrison Ford to do this film.

Villeneuve leaves the noir and the baroque/neo-renaissance of the 1° Blade Runner to make a thriller with a more generic sci-fi scenography, a cold world that has lost humanity. It's good that V. didn't just copy Scott, but that style was what made Blade Runner stand out aesthetically. The story is about a main character that discovers to not be a main character, just an average Joe: very cyberpunk-y. 2049 is less about "what is humanity" and more about memory/identity, a topic loved by V.

It was very pretty and had good acting but, I dunno, it felt insubstantial. The original had a lot to say while this felt like a film trying to hide its muddled concept with nice visuals and big stars. That's not to say it isn't entertaining, it's just not much more than that.

Blade Runner 2049 is one of the few too-late sequels that's actually worthwhile. It even improves on aspects of the original. Its narrative is more directly engaging and it looks even better. We become immersed in this world and love almost every minute of it. It looks and sounds fantastic, it's well-acted, and if it has an issue, it's that it feels about 20 minutes too long. All in all, it's a really great movie that can justify its existence. It's sad how few of these projects can sa

An incredible visual world woven with scenes that make a person reinterpret what dystopia actually means and the evolution of technology and humanity. The conceptualization of sentience and humanity is shown to be a blurry line. We are spared the philosophical naval gazing and instead we experience first hand the uncertain human boundaries of an actual replicant. This more intimate look does not surpass the first film but is equally brilliant in building on its own themes in unexpected ways.

A very very very very pretty movie that I'm not entirely convinced has all that much interesting to say or at least that much to say that hasn't been said hundreds of times since the original film came out.

Visually (and aurally) arresting sequel is overlong and lacks real substance; the final act delving into Deckard's psyche is the highpoint and could have been pushed further (Ford's beautifully pained and understated performance is a stand-out here). Gosling does his best with what is inescapably a cold and alien character; the 'twist' in his character ultimately feels like a cheat; it might have been more interesting if it had gone in another direction. Definitely benefits from a second watch.

It's not as effortless as the original was in establishing an emotional connection, and you can predict where the plot is going most of the time. That being said, it serves as a fully realized sci-fi story of its own, and there's enough turns away from what you expect to happen to keep things interesting. A few scenes even reach the level to stick in your mind for days to come (the threesome, several spoiler scenes). Good to see big-budget set design in a modern film again.

The original Blade Runner was a movie about universal doubt. This is a movie full of reassuring certainties. Ponderous, dense with CGI, kung-fu fights, super-villains, pseudo-religious ramblings and "we'll win in the end", it's been written by a dumb teenager for a generation of dumb teenagers that get their pleasure from seeing the pieces of a puzzle fit together, no matter what picture they compose- or even if it makes sense. The soundtrack was bought at the soundtracks McDonald's.

First of all it's utterly boring no matter how gorgeous it looks. Ryan Gosling is also pretty boring but not compared to his extremely boring virtual relationship. Jared Leto is, of course, laughable and lines like "the emptiness between the stars" (or whatever) is such a far cry from Rutger Hauer's that it's an embarrassment. The Elvis gimmick is just plain awful, and product placement is all over the place, but that's the least of problems in this tedious and pretentious bore of a movie.

This is a really good sci-fi film, but a bad blade runner movie. Ultimately Villeneuve and Deakins did their own thing, and the result is breathtakingly beautiful, but it's anchored to something it cannot live up to. Worth watching in a theater for the sound design and cinematography alone though.

It is very difficult not to admire the relaxed cinematographic style of Villeneuve, the story follows his own pace, he is not rushing anywhere. However, I'd think Philip K. Dick would never write something this much lethargic and humourless. +Please, please stop casting ryan gosling, the guy can't act at all. He is like a piece of dead log come to life but only partially.

This one works well as a sci-fi flick, but poor as a Blade Runner successor; you don't take up pole vaulting if you're Sergey Bubka's son, the standard and the legacy are just too high.

Visuals & atmosphere were really impressive though the pacing was not as meditative as I was expecting (too much flying and too much location change). The central idea is that there is a 'modality' of humanity, which can be partaken in by non-human beings as well. In that sense, it radically differs from movies like Matrix which tie the ontology of 'humannnes' to the ontic being of authentic human body. But at the the end of the day, both are Platonic visions of melodramatic humanity.

I have issues with the script. Some key questions are still unanswered. Contrary to the first movie, it has no meaningfull aphorism. It was another disappointment that they demolished the promising characters who could shine. Nevertheless, this movie is a visually perfectness and this fact makes it attractive. So we should appreciate Roger Deakins and the talented Denis Villeneuve for increasing the value of this work.

A beautifully austere and thoughtful meditation on humanity just like the first; if it lacks for anything, it's the original's acute sense of arch, genre-bending weirdness. But that's okay; that just means it's not one of the very greatest films ever made. Being a worthy sequel to such a film, all these years later, is success enough for me.

The word is out, Denis Villeneuve is a hack. Quite a talented hack, nonetheless. After viewing Sicario and Prisoners I already had my doubts, but after '2049' it can no longer be denied. Villeneuve knows how to emulate actual good films, borrows quite a bit, but never knows how to create greatness within those borrowed fundaments. Yes, the visuals are nice, yes it resembles a good film, but it all left me a tad cold. I walked out feeling empty, whereas the original thrills me, time and time again

I'll be annoyed if Roger Deakins doesn't win the Oscar for Best Cinematography for this. Fourteen nominations and no wins? Come on. Anyway, this is really good, although your mileage may vary. Villeneuve remains one to watch - can he nail Dune?

Ryan Gosling was good and Ana de Armas was oh so sweet. The story was a bit overbearing and brutal and there were a few confusing plot points. Full of action, suspense and intrigue. Uneven pacing. Good cast with excellent performances. Good music and sound. It's even more of a bleak dystopian than the original. I was engaged and entertained throughout, but I also felt as though more could have been done with the story and that some of the visuals too dark or overdone.

Awesome directing from Villeneuve (again) and beautifully shot. I think that the plot was not the best, but it was enough to create a nice environment to play with. Dave Bautista acting depth suprised me.

It is visually immersive, and I do recommend to see it on largest screen possible, yet I believe 3D is not necessary. It really is immersive, and gives you very real feeling, somehow that the movie is real - though the story can be a bit difficult to believe at some points, the individual messages this film has, are clear, and some scenes will left you puzzled for a long time. Those almost three houres are not too long, as the movie rather slow pace is absolutely adequate.

The entirety of Jared Leo's character was unnecessary. With out him K would have still gone searching for the child, then searching for answers about himself and run into Deckard. The score is at times great and vast, and at times inappropriately so.like when K finds the wooden horse and there are two minutes of goddamn horns blaring. Heavily orange and blue, blatantly aggravated water with the struggles of life, and stillness when Leto's henchwoman is strangled and drown to death as a robot.
