I was fascinated by Refn's artistic growing pains in his sophomore work. It revels in skepticism about the violence it revels in as well. It too harshly skewers guys who have seen too many movies, while blatantly boasting the fact that Refn himself is one. As in his debut, he still wears Tarantino etc. influences on his sleeve, and there's a sort of narrative "split end" in that the directions the film takes don't tie together, but Refn's talent and his effort to come into his own really show.

Okay I found some of the later scenes a bit harder to swallow, but overall I was fascinated by the psychology and interaction of the characters, really good stuff. Also I found it interesting to see Refn develop the formalism and visual flamboyance he would later be known for. Definetely worth a watch.

A clear indication of Refn's later style, in somewhat embryonic form (far more so than the Pusher films). Given his growing reputation as an auteur this should really get a US release already.

Like a cross between Clerks. and Taxi Driver and a conversation with Tarantino. An amazing study of characters affected by film, struggling to either maintain sanity or improve their lives.

It was definitely a slow burn - but it paid off in the end...

There is a tarantinian influence in the air but the movie itself is much more serious than the most of its influencer. Though certain scenes are slightly ridiculous and the fall down of the main character could have been developed to its fullest better, still there is a very nice mixture of quaint (Mikkelsen's part mostly) and dismal which for me surprisingly was just at the correct proportion. And finally is not as shiny and polished to the unreal as most hollywood movies are.

Nicolas Winding Refn is one of the best directors.

On a technical level, the shots here are generally more dynamic and less dry than those of his debut, but still not quite a perfect fit for the types of scripts he writes. Refn shamelessly self-inserting his inner film nerd into all of the characters is a big mood though.

This is a masterful film. It is unbelievably intense, bleak, visceral and chilling. Its depiction of violence is so incredibly shocking, the nightclub scene and Leo's 2nd beating of his partner are so uncomfortable, but yet you can't stop watching. Lenny is a relatable character and a seemingly clear director self-insert, his story has glimmers of true hope which contrasts greatly with Leo's rage-filled tale. A gripping, bleak and realistic film which is masterfully crafted by Refn.

Cool and unambitious old-style Refn with another lovely and memorable Mads Mikkelsen character: the guy who ONLY wants to talk about movies. Not Pusher by any metric but definitely funny and some great signature Refn set piece choreography. The writing is witty but unlaboured. Zlatko Buric is thin and not menacing here, first time i’ve seen that!
