Everything I could want out of a movie. Funny but weighty. Creative but earnest. Clever but honest. Complex in so many ways - characterization, themes, morality. Its script is episodic but tightly woven at the same time. It's easy to merely call this timely, but I think it's more than that. This is unlike anything I've seen before. Please don't stray from this aesthetic, Daveed and Rafael. Cinema needs it.

Thankfully this was much better, much more complex, tonally challenging and thematically rich than the horrible trailer projected.

Less the story of an ex-con trying to stay out of trouble, and more about the unspoken rage and suppressed tensions quietly simmering beneath the surface. Its topics and themes have been dealt with plenty of times in the past, but rarely have they been explored in such an open and inventive fashion. Aside from a contrived last segment, which somewhat negates the entire commentary it's trying to make, I'd say this is a pretty sweet film with style and great characters to boot.

A great film that would have been phenomenal had it ended sooner. The film features fantastic acting, interesting social commentary, and great chemistry between the two leads. However, the final act, "off of probation," was pretty trashy; the symbolism was jarringly ham-fisted especially with the lead threatening a police officer while rapping which pushed things into absolute absurdity. It lacked the nuance of the earlier portions of the film and almost ruined an otherwise great film.

Terrifying and funny and intense and heartwarming and almost all of it was one of the best films of 2018 but I had to knock some off the score because of the terrible way they chose to play the climactic scene. Like, good god damn

One of the better movies of 2018. Apparently this is the director's first feature film and he's previously directed music videos and short films. That stylistic influence definitely shows, and it mostly succeeds. Yet that doesn't take away from the movie's quality of being "real." While the writing may get a bit "too much" sometimes, there are some beautiful scenes, and the overall product is very satisfying.

Pure energy. A beautiful love letter to The Bay Area. Equally engrossing as a human drama and an exploration of the fears and realities of gentrification and racial tensions. I just really adored this. Go CLPPNG.

I'm so glad I saw this film.So refreshing and unconventional. It's funny and charismatic while also being intense and electrifying to watch. Not only that it's also wonderfully directed, beautifully shot and the two main performances are really riveting and full of depth. There is some real passion behind this movie and it shows. It deals with themes that are really important for today's society and I think for that reason it should be seen by a lot of people.

Exceptionally well-crafted social statement is that rarity that crafts a compelling, free-wheeling narrative that manages to neatly dovetail to deliver its spare, brutal social moral; it's only on reflection that you realise how diabolically well structured the screenplay really is. Diggs and Casal's double threat achievement as writers and charismatic leading men is commendable, and the overtly theatrical, stylised sequences shouldn't work at all, yet feel entirely organic.

Creatively shot & well acted, the film itself is a bit heavy-handed in its messaging and metaphors, as well as uneven in tone. Still, it succeeds in creating an atmosphere in which you never feel safe for the characters, the mode they live in all the time.

Blindspotting has a lot to say. When it says through these characters's lives, it works. When it says it through their mouths, it doesn’t quite work. I suspect there’s a cultural barrier here for me, as the characters repeatedly break out into spoken-word, freestyle verse of the sort that some call slam poetry. When it’s dramatic, I have difficulty taking it seriously. And while I admire the device for its vision, creativity, and daring, it doesn’t quite click things into place the way i

Rapping while pointing a gun at a cop was really cheesy. It's a shame because that one scene hurts, but everything around it is solid. Aside from that there wasn't anything I didn't like. I loved watching the friendship between Collin and Miles, and while the writing is obviously important, the two actors really brought that relationship to life. Blindspotting hits commentary that you might expect if you follow the news but it does so with finesse.

A timely film that has a lot to say. While it occasionally stumbles in the delivery of its messages it makes up for it in sheer energy and spirit.

Few films this year shift gears between comedy and tragedy so smoothly or to such effect. Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, playing roles they wrote (fantastically) themselves, are both superb. One of the year's finest films.

A relevant, cultural reference that becomes heartfelt with its build up. It also seems to be a tasteful representation of ‘the town,' matched with enticing camerawork and style. This light jog of a dramedy surprised me with what is now one of my favourite scenes in 2018 thus far.

It is hard to escape comparisons of Estrada's film to those of Spike Lee. Beyond the similar messages within the narrative, the energy and the anger that the film contains is electrifying. What starts as a comical tale about two friends and their love for their city gives way to both of them growing up and spitting some real fire regarding some of the injustices that they face. There were several great films exploring black America in 2018 and this is right up there with the best of them.

Excellent dramedy that teeters to each side of the fence in turn, but I still don't know what the intention behind the "Hands up don't shoot" scene is--it could go either way. It takes its title seriously.

A powerhouse of sublime characterization with two awesome performances by Diggs and Casal. It knows when to take topics of race, crime, identity, and friendship seriously, and when to make light of them. This movie didn't get enough praise when it came out, and I don't think it's getting enough from me either. It's fantastic.

One of the hardest tricks to pull off in storytelling is making something that is funny and also powerful. And man, did they ever pull it off here. I feel like I could watch 100 hours of just Collin and Miles moving through their daily lives. The movie certainly isn't perfect--especially the contrived ending that you see coming from 10 miles away--but what it gets right is truly outstanding.

worth it for the monologue alone. while tonally felt tiptoe-ing strangely between dramatic and comedic in the beginning, it finds its stride near the end, and it's absolutely magnetizing when it does.

It was not hard to identify with the main protagonist played by Daveed Diggs. His volatile sidekick was harder to understand. There were many tense moments. A few exchanges, especially during the boat sale, was hilarious. Several scenes felt oddly like a rap musical. The story is raw and highly charged. It alternates between funny and tragic. Excellent acting performances and production quality. It provides a lot of excitement and entertainment. Well worth watching.

A movie about two opposing forces meeting without control, Blindspotting is shaky at times and sometimes meanders, but manages to capture a measured, even-handed (if fantastical and frustrating) glimpse of cinematic Oakland, yet another movie in that city's recent film renaissance. Gentrification vs. hometown, black vs. white, "right" vs. "wrong," class vs. culture - it runs rampant over all kinds of divides, not always successfully, but it's confident enough to try.

Blindspotting is the To Pimp a Butterfly of movies; it seems to do everything at once, and all of it extremely well. What makes it so difficult to write about this movie coherently, is the fact that all of its elements come together flawlessly, in a way that shouldn't work but evidently does. Yes, it really is funny, dramatic, thought-provoking and tense. No, I don't know how this movie does it so well, while so many others fail. Yes, that does bother me.

Hilarious, and intermittently spectacularly insightful. Several flourishes come together in what would otherwise be a horrible, cloying scene. Other scenes are breathtakingly tense, speaking volumes even while characters are entirely silent. The weight of possibilities interwoven within the film make the levity of the near-constant stream of jokes seem to carry even more amplitude. There's a lot going on, and as in all such films it is impossible that all people will feel the same, but I dig it.

The film's only mistake is its attempt to deliver comedic relief, which all falls horribly flat. The themes are too important to be interrupted with bad jokes. It would be unforgivable if it wasn't otherwise very well written. Diggs' performance is outstanding.

The directing is a little hyperactive (makes sense for a music video director turned first-time feature director), but still really hard not to get swept up in all the moving pieces and how well they interact with each other. Really delivers on its promise to have the city be the main character.

two besties are undergoing a racial crisis in a disorienting, rapidly gentrifying oakland; the white guy wears a gold grill and buys a gun, the black guy starts trying VEGAN SMOOTHIES. sounds like a recipe for a shitty buddy comedy, and i wish it was just that instead of centring around all these super duper timely important dramatic climaxes that have the style points of a steph curry jumper but plunge to the ground just as fast, each further exposing how little of value is actually being said.

You gotta love how skillful it is by slowly turning its buddy, hood comedy bits into a profound -- but see, still engaging, funny and kinectic, with constant rapping, body language, urban poetry -- friendship film about race relations in America, police brutality, fear of the other and white privilege.

I don't think this film manages to balance the mix of tones all the time (particularly in the first half), but it's also never dull and has a lot on it's mind. Daveed and Casal (who co-wrote the film) are extremely good, and the escalating series of events that form the last half hour are gripping and thought provoking.

Saw on 11/17/18. Going through some old noted decimal scores before having an app like this to add them to. This movie was very well done and while definitely not perfect was very entertaining despite the serious nature overall. Good balance of authenticity and realism outside the artistic choice of adding rap to serious situations. Memorable one. 8.2 for me
