I see the traces of Joe to come in this early phase as he approaches nature and body meditatively and medically, introspecting into the transcendental in the natural and the mundane. The eternal cycle of life and death; an old woman dying and losing her gift of birth, a young woman full with her sexual energy, a "stranger" man in between, who casts his "skin" off nearby a river, the symbol of flow and becoming. They will all perish one day, and the river will change its bed, that's life.

the voiceover/drawings are a rare slip into preciousness, but otherwise its simplicity and purity are a balm for the spirit (complete with nasty skin rashes, ant bites, drowned children, uncensored erect dicks and a blowjob). the mother is transformed from an annoying "bitch" into a heartbreaking character by one throwaway conversation, and her apprehensive dip into the water may be the closest film has got to approximating the feeling of steaming away your aches and troubles in a hot bath.

I really struggled with this one, and I enjoyed Tropical Malady, Syndromes and a Century and Uncle Boonmee. Just too little happens and its very aimless. It definitely has its moments though, but I wouldn't start with this one if you're interested in Weerasethkul's films.

This and 'Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives' are competing together as the director's best film for me, a very minimalist and evocative take on a sexual and romantic rendezvous in the rainforest, contrasted and connected to the story of an older woman who knows them. It is a contemplative arthouse film which has a depth to it which, if you are patient with, rewards you greatly.

Really the only Weerasethakul movie I found boring. It's not that it doesn't have merits... it's beautiful like his films always are. This just didn't do it for me. Not a bad movie, as I said it's still well made, and that's why it's got a 65.

Several moments are dragged out for very long stretches of time. Sometimes it works in a Ming-liang Tsai kind of way, but there's a couple that seem a bit pointless and try one's patience. However, I do love the unusual little touches (the sudden appearance of the opening credits, the on-screen sketches) and overall tenor of the film. Very blissful, indeed, though the underlying sadness of these characters is always lurking. A meditative and interesting work.
