Blithe Spirit

Doesn't really do anything that the first adaptation didn't do seventy-five years ago. This one changes some details here and there, but the only real difference is that Stevens has a hell of a lot more charisma than Rex Harrison did, please don't hit me.

Whilst undoubtedly nice to look at, with Surrey looking very glamourous, this was a bit of a lame duck. The whole point of Blithe Spirit was to counterpoint the "farce" with impending tragedy (however soft that tragedy might be) but in this version, the only impending threat was a bit of knife throwing (which was, admittedly, the best bit of the film). I am not sure the "roaring 40's" translates very well to modern times, as it now looks more like a cliche, than it does a period of recent histor

Light and theatrical.

I like the cast of Blithe Spirit, but the film remains an unfunny slog that drags through its 95 minutes. I was barely invested in or entertained by the bourgeoisie characters. Mann delivers the only amusing interlude acting out the finale of her widower's screenplay. Fisher is mediocre. Dench is at least moving up from Cats. Rather than being an edgy comedy of tragedy, this film spent its efforts on revising the original play to make the wives seem "empowered" at the expense of quality.

The plot is there, but there's no tone at all. It should be funny, but never is. It should be horrifying, but never is. It should be maddening, but never is. It just exists to go through the motions with no spirit.

I did enjoy this light farce; Stevens has great expression. The storyline had some cringe moments, and I'm sorry to say that the injected feminism was partly to blame. Still got a few laughs and was an easy romp for a night home with a glass of wine.
