Blood Alley

Dumb, bad, full of plot holes, inconsistencies, things that don't make sense and stupid stereotypes. It's not that they're trying to be offensive. It's that they're apparently trying to make sure, the movie has a certain minimum of offensiveness and ignorance. Literally the dumbest thing, though, was when he waited to tell her about her father's death until she actually awaits his arrival, only to run over to her, smack her in the face and be just like "Your father's dead, deal with it!". :D

Racist depictions are rather silly, but the movie can't just rely on John Wayne's bravado to will the plot along. Bacall's chemistry is lacking but there was a bit of a smile when she turned around to smack him, probably after insisting on several takes. This also falls in the trope of white savior in a foreign land...there were no local Chinese with generational knowledge of the waterway? Fav scene: when they're all taking on last look at their homeland before leaving.

A '50s anti-communist action picture with a white savior and racist depictions. Bacall had better chemistry with some of her other leading men. It's a watchable film but not memorable.
