As interesting as "Blood Trail" could have been, it never really dives too deeply into any one topic. Whether it's war itself, the business of war photography, the brutal nature of the job, fear of death, fear of loss or fear of sound mind; the film never really bothers to look to deep into any of these topics. Instead, it quickly mentions them and moves onto the next topic. Oddly, Kring is hunting with the film-maker, but there's no view into the irony of shooting things that won't shoot back.

Enough of Blood Trail's running time is spent trying to unearth King's personal demons that it strangely hints the characteristics that drove him into his profession form the basis of some social malady. Whereas War Photographer treats war photography as an artform and an end in itself, Blood Trail nearly trivializes the act of photography as a means to personal exorcism.
