Possibly the most generic and unimaginative movie I've seen.

The family and culture representation here raised this above average for me. The plot is very basic storytelling at this point, it isn’t free of the tropes or predictability, but it is mostly well acted and I’m very content with the action and casting for Jaime Reyes as a Blue Beetle fan. I liked the characters and I like what they did with Carapax and how everything came full circle for everyone. It’s a great time at the movies, even if it doesn’t reinvent the comic book movie formula.

Starts off well with some good "Ant-Man"-esque Latin family humour. But it quickly devolves into standard superhero fare, and its budget feels like Arrowverse TV quality or a Disney Channel movie, not this giant IMAX screen. The pretty-faced lead certainly lacks the charisma, charm, or comic timing of Paul Rudd. But easily worst is Susan Sarandon's character "Paycheck McGee". The Cypress Hill needle drop brought a smile at least. Worst movie of 2023?

This is a lazy movie with uninteresting non-characters, a plot that makes no sense at all, and a whole bunch of speeches stuffed with empty platitudes standing in for actual relationships between the characters. I didn't exactly hate watching this film, but I really felt should have given how utterly stupid it assumed I must be.

At this point, asking for originality in a superhero movie is perhaps unfair, but this being lifted shot for shot, almost line for line, from an assortment of other movies is just lazy. Doesn't help that the lead doesn't have an ounce of charisma and screen presence.

It has heart and personality. Latinx people in the audience were laughing so some of the cultural jokes were clearly on point. That said, it suffers from your usual superhero movie weaknesses eg. low stakes and no danger (minimal death/killing)

"Blue Beetle introduces an engaging, family-focused superhero story to the DCEU. Drawing inspiration from Marvel, it offers a lighter tone, yet struggles with originality. The standout lies in the heartwarming family dynamics, adding depth to the characters. While familiar tropes are present, it's a positive step towards a more balanced and relatable DC cinematic universe."

DC superhero action with a Blue Beetle (2023). Running out of big ones to do movies about. And it does what all the others do. Bring a origin story that's barely going to be followed-up with a proper adventure once they've established the hero beyond the comic hardcores. I kind of got into George Lopez as this conspiracy hippy. He became the saving grace for my enjoyment of this.

Fairly dumb but watchable. Has some potential for future but they have a lot to fix. Unbelievable characters. Nana was the best. Might be rated too high.

Blue Beetle is a successful first step into the new DC universe. It had a similar feel to the comic book adaptations that came out in the 2000s. Being intertwined with Latin culture and prioritizing familial ties make the film emotionally strong. Also, the costume design and transformation moments are GORGEOUS! The action is also good, the soundtrack and song choices are excellent. (Cineverse Kanyon - 08/15/2023) I had a great time.

Predictable yet engaging story with good performances all around. Oh, and it has a not so subtle political message.

I had fun with this. It continues DC's "more-Marvel" trajectory, and the injections of Latin culture and elements of body horror made this stand out amongst its peers. I didn't love Susan Sarandon's villain, but, that continues the genre-wide problem of ineffectual villains. I'd have personally enjoyed more overt tie-ins with the rest of the DC Universe (there are some Easter eggs for sure but give me more!), though I guess that's more forgivable given the reset button that's been hammered.

Blue Beetle is oddly reminiscent of Raimi’s original Spider-Man. It’s very cheesy and campy in its action flair. On top of this, they both have likable characters with similar origins. However, where Blue Beetle’s meat really rests is in its tone and themes. It executes the cute family dynamic well, and ultimately make almost every character feel interesting. The villains are generic, but even Trujillo/Carprax has some real development. Ultimately, Blue Bettle does the little things well.

Does it reinvent the superhero wheel, in a time when many people suffer superhero fatigue? Nah. But it's also a damn good time. The Cypress Hill tune mixed with the fight choreography near the end is really inspired shit. Maybe the plot is pretty basic but I didn't care because you don't need much more than this, and it's also a good look at family. Plus, I love the Blue Beetle suit. It looks really cool.

I got bored so much. It's not very well done, people are screaming all the time, the Reyes family is just exhausting.

Even though it touches on heavy culturally-specific trauma, BLUE BEETLE has a light touch that's reminiscent of pre-MCU superhero films, right down to the love interest who is way out of the hero's league. The feeling is welcome, and what it lacks in freshness is balanced by an easy sense of humor - courtesy of a scene-stealing George Lopez - and earnest performances.

This is the best DCEU movie of the year. Actually, probably since The Suicide Squad. Since The Batman was not cannon to this universe. This was indeed better than I was expecting. In a year full of mid DC movies, it's nice to have a decent-to-good one. What it lacks in story, it makes up for with fun and heart. It can't come close to Across the Spiderverse or Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, but then again, very few can.

Incredibly unimaginative and by the numbers. Modern equivalent of a 90s superhero movie, it delivers EXACTLY every beat you expect. Right down to the "someone is looking in their car mirror when the hero flies by and smashes the mirror off'.The only unique element is the family, but even that's mostly annoying and played for comedy.Sarandon wasted. I have no idea who this is aimed at,if I was under 10 and had never seen Ironman this would be passable but the swearing and some deaths ruin that.

I think this is better than most DC movies. It did a relatively good job with humor and representing the family and culture and having a different superhero (although he does seem like a bit of a Spiderman ripoff). It was pretty forgettable and generic, like a knock-off superhero movie rather than a flagship movie.

Blue Beetle is painfully generic. You've got the face off between two guys in Iron-Man-esque suits. You've got the word "family" being shouted in your face at a rate that could rival a Fast & Furious episode. The world building is lazy at best. The script is so bad that even Sarandon's attempt to ham it up comes across poorly. The effects look good and the almost use of Latino actors is commendable, but it's far from a good film.

It's fine. It introduces us to a guy and what he can do. For DC, this is a major step forward, but too late.

Not too good I’m afraid. I absolutely hate when the superhero suit itself won’t shut up in anything except Iron Man (this, MCU Spider-Man etc). “TARGET ACQUIRED!” shut the FUCK up suit, I don’t care!!! Plot structure is somewhat similar to Raimi Spider-Man 1 except far too time compressed, mostly taking place over like 36 hours. Way too much of Blue Beetle being a bystander in his own story and wayyy too much George Lopez.

This super hero character is not very interesting. There was a nice family dynamic with the characters but the villain and hero are both boring. Overall this film is disappointing.

The first 40 minutes of this movie felt straight out of a comic book. The origin stuff with the Scarab and Jaime was very well told but then after the transformation the movie lost its way. While the action was still stellar, the characters started to feel one dimensional. Mostly the villain roles. We have seen the ruthless mega corporation trying to build military grade tech for nefarious purposes. Blue Beetle is a great character who sadly got lost in a mediocre script. Seems to be DCs style.

As generic as you can get, but as a Brazilian I just loved Bruna Marquezine shining in a Hollywood flick, to the chagrin of Neymar fans lol.

I know that the family was supposed to be adorable but I found them to be annoying with the younger sister Milagros being completely unlikable. The story itself felt very TeenDisney, think Even Stevens or Kim Possible. Susan Sarandon seemed to have been channeling Glenn Close's Cruella while chewing the scenery in this. Most of the characters were annoying, bland, or both. Xolo Mariduena as Jaime Reyes was good but seemed to have some trouble carrying the film. This was pretty good for a TV pilo

It's great to see some actual Hispanic representation, but sad that it's in the equivalent form of a mediocre kids' Saturday morning cartoon. And one of the bad filler episodes where they phoned it in. Despite the best efforts of energy and commitment from the cast, every scene was troubled with some form of "that makes no sense," beyond any suspension of disbelief. Maybe a handful are expected in movies like this, but the amount in Blue Beetle are disappointingly unforgivable.

If this is Gunn's vision for the new and improved DC cinematic experience, I worry it'll be over before it even began. It's boring and unoriginal, has no distinguishing look or feel, and feels like it belongs on daytime TV alongside reruns of NCIS considering both cast performances and character portrayals. Embarrassing through and through. But hey, DC finally got what they wanted - the Marvel experience.

It’s cool to see a big studio superhero movie with a largely Spanish-speaking Latino family at the forefront, but that is literally the only thing separating this from anything that Marvel or DC has belched out in the last 15 years. It’s another re-heated origin story with all the fixings; an algorithmic checklist of perfunctory action sequences and familiar plot beats and character types. This is as boring and nonsensical as anything this tired genre has wrought.

When dealing with a story that leans so much on previous works, you have to be sharp in your execution and big in your arm movements. Blue Beetle is neither, so even the film's few bright spots are overshadowed by the overall sloppiness.
