Great classic comedy with Cooper and Colbert in fine form. The script is great but some parts in the middle lack focus and seem a bit repetitive. It's still a lot of good slightly cynical Lubitsch fun.

There's so many laughs in this sophisticated Ernst Lubitsch comedy, but the lead actors, while having a lot of quality moments, don't reach full steam so a lot of the rapid dialogue between Claudette Colbert & Gary Cooper feels hammy. I still loved a lot about this! Especially the scenes with pushover David Niven and knockout expert Warren Hymer. Also at the sanitarium. Voff-voff!

Viewed June 8, 2020. Lubitsch is always next level, but this sadistic comedy is particularly special.

Box OP Ernst Lubit

Nothing but fun & games, but with a script by Wilder and Brackett you can't go wrong! It's all about the rapid dialogue, peppered with cynicism and innuendo. It's very funny, and Cooper and Colbert are great together. David Niven shines in a supporting role as a feeble employee of Cooper's.

Full of sinister and at the same time amiable characters, and consistently cute, clever and amusing, this is good Lubitsch.

Before Billy Wilder became an amazing director he was a super script writer. Of course, it is not not all his merit but his presence is tangible in every phrase and scene.

Far better than I was lead to believe. I came in suspicious, it came out my favorite Lubitsch.

A marriage turns into internecine warfare. Good thing this movie is so witty. Were it not for that, and were not the lead players Claudette Colbert, Gary Cooper, Edward Everett Horton, and David Niven, it might well be fucking unbearable. In other words, another movie with unique virtues that you probably won't ever see made by anyone ever again. At least not in a fashion that actually works. And *another* reason for me to eat my words about how much Lubitsch movies suck

There's less finesse here than in the best Lubtisch films (i found it very disjointed and tonally uneven), but even amidst the cornier moments it's still a sophisticated step up from the typical '30s rom coms, and even more cynical than usual for him (almost bizarrely so, perhaps due to Wilder's input?)

Pure charm and fun wrapped in a decent amount of cynicism just to be safe. My fav Lubitsch for sure

Uneven, where Colbert seems to be playing all the time and Cooper seems to genuinely hate her.

Cooper isn't the most suave comedian but that gets compensated by the fast-paced verbal exchanges. Left craving for more of Lubitsch's subtle touches.

Amusing enough, though Cooper is a block of wood as usual. However, as this is meant to be a romance, the lack of warmth really harms the overall feel of the piece.

Lubitsch charms a smile onto my face again with this time his subtle satire of husband and wife roles. They don't make romantic comedies like these any more. Cooper's role as stark & stimied husband might seem a bit uncharming, but I think it fits this hero's journey, and added some unpredictability to the mix.

72 where "72" is good but could be better. The bggest hinderance I had before watching was "Cooper in a silly comedy....noooo". After watching I have to say "don't let that put you off" - though I'm sure that Powell or Grant would have done better, this is well written enough (or GC is talented enough) that it works and, though uneven, produces smiles and even laughs. Not the best of it's era (and that obvious back projection!!) it's still of a time when Hollywood comedies were unmatchable

A few laughs early on but went rapidly downhill. Just felt contrived. No one was likeable & the jokes fell flat. Felt like an older version of Clooney & Zeta-Jones’ Intolerable Cruelty. But the opposite of War of the Roses, which was infinitely more heartfelt & real, albeit darkly & satirically hyperreal. This, in contrast, is just some dismal soulless rubbish. Really baffled by the 80 PSI on this. What’s to like? Fun fact: 200 francs (the price of PJs) in 1938 is ~$97 USD in 2023.
