Who would have thought Film Noir could be blended with a musical and turn out so spectacularly. Mixes optimism and moody grim reality in a very original way with some excellent characterizations.

Having only heard of this recently, a "musical film noir" meant I had to see this immediately. While I was definitely excited, I knew it could be a disaster. But the film did a great job of blending in the two and knowing the right time to be light-hearted. A very fun movie and certainly the most unique film noir I've ever seen.

A unique film that mixes the threadbare sleaze of the noir with the wide-eyed optimism of the musical, tosses in a little fake history of the blues, and almost produces a blend. Future TV director Richard Whorf is good in the lead (Garfield turned it down), and it is interesting to see Elia Kazan in a small role as a member of the band. In fact, the whole cast is fine (although Priscilla Lane is definitiely too perky for noir.) Don Siegel directed the montage sequences, and they are excellent.

Noir prototype meets musical. Simply a terrific time.

Erratic and swingy, as the music that so centrally accompanies it. As its shortcoming, the plot could have been more coherent, but the liveliness makes up for it. Had the added charm of the visual sequences.

Great musical atmosphere, more so than for the femme fatal element, even if Betty Field was a character. The possessed spirit of Richard Whorf carried the drama. The gangster stuff felt out-of-place and almost pointless such a soundtrack movie.
