This is what film noir looks like in 1981, right at the point when 70's grit was giving way to 80's high-gloss. It teeters on the precipice of the two styles. The dialogue is lush and beautifully constructed. William Hurt is marvelous as the shaky lawyer at the forefront of the story, but the true MVP is Kathleen Turner, an actress with the dark-voiced presence of Bacall and the acting chops of Stanwyck. She was made for this sort of role and she commands the screen with a smoldering authority.

Took a little while to take off, but it's an allround successful noir/erotic thriller mashup. Hurt and Turner are pretty neat leads, and I thoroughly enjoyed Ted Danson's performance here oh god did I really just type that

Body Heat oozes atmosphere, style and feeling; its jazzy neo-noir sensibilities, combined with 80s sultriness and the sexually-driven performances of Hurt and Turner give it the impression of being an utterly unique creation, despite wearing its Chandlerian influences on its sleeve and paying homage to the archetypes and landmarks of classic noirs (particularly Double Indemnity). It deserves mention with Chinatown among the greats; other than its arbitrary last scenes, the movie rarely missteps.

Works both as an accomplished stylistic exercise and as a suspenseful, sexed-up riff on the noir genre. I particularly liked William Hurt, some perfect framings and the score.

While the overall plot and twists were predictable, and some of the dialogue more than heavy-handed, the rest of the dialogue and acting was smoking. It was at least engaging and inventive throughout most of its running time. So much so, Danson had a dance solo and I wasn't the least bit disturbed!

Rivals and even bests some of the popular film noirs of the '40s and '50s. It kept me on the edge of my seat and was very fun to watch.

Great neo-noir that really packs the heat. Turner & Hurt are one of the sexiest pairings I've ever seen, and the dialogue between them is femme fatale flirtation at its best. Fresh twists and a great atmosphere in Florida that you can really *feel* prevent this movie from being derivative.

Extraordinary 80s noir throwback notable for its establishment of an opressive atmosphere of heat and sweat. Hurt and Turner make a perfect couple, their dialogue crackles with as much energy as Bogart and Bacall in THE BIG SLEEP, and Ted Danson scores strongly in support as Hurt's eccentric friend (love those Astaire dance moves!). Also features great John Barry score. Definitely Lawrence Kasdan's best before he settled into perfunctory entertainments.

Not really a fan. It tries to get by only on its steamy, sweaty neo-noir atmosphere, but that doesn't really do it for me after the initial realization of how well it is done. The best part is Ted Danson, who dances in and out of the picture as his presence is needed.

Style and atmosphere are the keywords to describe this neo noir that borrows its plot from the classic 'Double Indemnity'. The beginning is so self-conscious it's almost comic, but later on the plot gets pretty captivating.

My new style icon is William Hurt in this film. Does anyone else find it weird that Hurt was the hottest actor of the 80s, and nowadays, you never hear about him? I honestly could not believe that was Mickey Rourke.

I think this neo-noir is a bit overrated: it's a bit too slow moving for it's own good. The original noir films that it's borrowing from only needed 90mins to tell their story. The plot gets too complex and Hurt's character needs to spell it out for us in the end. Still, there's chemistry between Hurt and Turner and their love scenes work well even though they are no longer as shocking as they were in the 80's. Director Kasdan also knows how to build a nice and steamy Florida atmosphere.

Some people probably think that this is either a remake or a reimagining of Double Indemnity. However, there are some of us that don't find Body Heat the least bit derivative & actually think it's better. All the little noir touches are present (ceiling fans, blazing heat, the woman in white) but it's given a provocative 80s gloss that's just mesmerizing. Kathleen Turner truly goes for broke here. She is the queen of all she surveys. Very, very sexy movie...

Damn fine neo noir, it relies heavily on atmosphere and succeeds admirably. Hurt and Turner are electric together and the mix of passion and tension are intertwined really well, truly taking what was subtext in many noirs and brining it right to the forefront.

Around the same time that Lawrence Kasdan's scripts for Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark were being lavishly produced by George Lucas, Kasdan directed this smaller, lower-profile work by himself. No epic spaceship battles here or sprawling adventures, but rather one of those "Postman Rings Twice" crime dramas, where wife and lover conspire to kill and heir her husband. It is better than most of them. The text excels, and William Hurt shines in the lead.

There were a couple of things that made this extra enjoyable for me: The fact that I'd only seen War of the Roses/Serial Mom Kathleen Turner, and that I've never seen Double Indemnity. I went into the movie fresh, and it's awesome. The casting is great (Danson and Rourke were unbelievably charming in supporting roles), and even though some overstate "atmosphere", Body Heat absolutely has it. It's sweaty, stuffy, sexy, and all noir (even if the dialogue seems cheesy occasionally).

This isn't how I like my noir (give me Barbara Stanwyck or Humphrey Bogart in the 1940s), but I can't deny this movie is good at what it's imitating. But it just lacks that charisma of true noir. William Hurt is a great actor and I find it odd that he never became a big name. He's great here and definitely the best thing about the movie. The worst thing: Ted Danson.

Utrolig stilig re-make av Double Indemnity, bare her uten begrensningene Hayes-koden la på førstnevnte.

In Body Heat aber erklärt Ned: "That man is gonna die for no reason but we want him to." (...)

With atmosphere to spare and a cast that smokes like a smithy's chimney, Kasdan has built the hazy motives of his characters into the fabric of his film. Despite these formal choices, the film doesn't do much in the way of drama, being as it is a pretty standard rehash of Double Indemnity (and sorry, but Turner doesn't hold a candle to Barbara Stanwyck).

Of all the films which have sought to emulate the original noir canon, I don't think any has hit the nail on the head quite as squarely as Body Heat. It would be easy to dismiss as merely derivative if it weren't so damn sultry and provocative in its own right. All I really need is a good mood piece anyway, but these performances are terrific too, and there's plenty of plotty density to keep a viewer hanging on.
