Apocalypto in a Western setting, with a dash of X-Files' 'Home'? Hoot dang, sign me the hell up! The cast is great (I came around on Wilson halfway through), characters own and the plot kept me interested and anxious throughout. Can get pretty tense or mentally exhausting in a good way, and That One Scene will stick with me for a while, holy moly. The developments near the end clash with the realistically fatalistic atmosphere the movie built so well, but ehhh, it had earned it at that point.

Four men travel into the wilderness to rescue a woman who has been abducted by a savage, animalistic clan of natives in this black and bloody western. Kurt Russell plays a slightly more polished (but just as badass) version of his Hateful Eight character, who never loses his composure...even when things turn out to be much, much worse than he suspected. Has some gnarly gore and almost no music until the very end, but the end credits song is absolutely hilarious. A worthwhile western.

Horror Westerns are so hard to come by (I would be hard pressed to name ten, even if I stretch the definition of either genre) that I knew I'd enjoy this just based on the summary. And I did! Would make a lovely companion piece to Ravenous.

Bone Tomahawk is an oddly minimalistic but incredibly satisfying & refreshingly unique Western. The casting of Kurt Russell justifies anybody to give this film a chance. And this has to be the best role he's landed since Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof'. The horrific vilolence & gore is shockingly unexpected but admittedly entertaining. And both tonally & atmospherically this is a somewhat peculiar experience. But I welcome a resurgence of Western's that take risks and try new things.

There's some dialogue in the middle of the movie, mostly spoken by Richard Jenkins (who is awful in this), that needed to be cut out badly. It was a really well made and interesting take on the western genre and has me excited for Zahler's future work. Has legitimately one of the most brutal gore scenes ever made and a kill that would make Saw and Hostel fans drool. A bizarre and fun movie but I'm not sure who it's going to appeal to at all. Also, Kurt Russell's facial hair is legendary

The pacing in the movie is very interesting, and I'm not sure why. The characters are excellent (although Chicory's speech is odd). I was interested the whole way through, and the I loved that the characters had experience (not just the usual horse-riding and gunplay); hence some nice details (tripwire, dialogue, signals, markers, etc). My only serious complaint is with the troglodytes and their "features" (bizarre to say the least). On a side note, Sheriff Hunt is as Lawful Good as it gets.

I think a few subtle changes to the script could have turned this okay western/horror into a great film. The main problem may be that the long running time fails to maintain the tension necessary to keep the proceedings interesting.

i wasn't so into the dialogue as a lot of people; some great lines, but the naturalism seemed pretty self-conscious to me, and epitomised a film which strains to be an unusual and striking genre riff in the absence of any kind of meaningful vision. most annoyingly, it actually bends over backwards to apologise for itself at times. 'tis a compelling, economically directed curiosity full of strong, even touching, performances, but these DEADWOOD comparisons are doing it no favours whatsoever.

Performances ranged from good to excellent. Kurt Russell & Patrick Wilson were awesome in this. Lili Simmons was beautiful. The stupid cannibal savage mutants were entirely ridiculous. The graphic violence subtracted greatly. A quality production. Good dialog considering the insane premise. The old assistant deputy was a character. Except for the idiotic troglodytes this was quite satisfying.

Strange movie. Very insignificant. Seems like it's about nothing and there's nothing behind it. It's just two hours of some characters saying and doing stuff, which amounts to a bit of plot, until the movie's over and there's an extremely silly song, which sounds like it's making fun of something, 'cause it's so retarded, but you're pretty sure it's not. It's well cast and well done and stuff, but...in the end it's still like a nicely wrapped present with...I don't know...a pencil inside.

Exceptionally odd: in the Old West, a small posse confronts a tribe of troglodytes who have kidnapped the wife of one of them. A somewhat outmoded B-movie premise is given a strangely restrained treatment with a meditative pace reinforced by a long (133 minutes) running time. It doesn't really come off, in part due to flat direction and a failure to embrace either mood or thrills, but it's such a tonal anomaly--and the acting is really quite strong--that it remains perversely compelling.

A horror Western masterpiece, and one of the TOUGHEST movies you'll ever see. It's about a group of people coming face-to-face with the most insidious evil imaginable and raging against that evil. It's thoughtful, horrifying, and brilliant, with some of the best acting and smartest writing you'll encounter all year. Most folks will be grossed out by it--I thought it was oddly touching, even cathartic, in its portrayal of regular folk rising up and doing what needs to be done.

How great is Richard Jenkins in this? I didn't even know it was him until I saw the cast list after the fact. There is an aridity to this that I can only attribute to bad directing choices. It has an interesting script, even if the dialogue's playfulness leads nowhere, but Zahler doesn't know how to use music, build tension, or create movement - all of which may be called minimalism, but it also results in two hours plus.

This was a fun-filled old west movie, complete with engaging characters and tension so thick you could cut it with a bone saw. What a lot of horror movies can't seem to get right is that if the characters have no souls then we don't care whether they live or die. Recommend!

This already needs critical re-evaluation. Bone Tomahawk is a new, unique perspective on the classic journey into the heart of darkness tale that's been adapted previously by works such as Aguirre and Apocalypse Now. The slow natural pacing is informed by the greatest westerns and emphasizes the looming shadow of death the characters head into. Humorous dialogue grapples with despair and the chemistry among the main four actors belongs near the best ever seen in a western. This is a new classic.

It's interesting the way this movie handles the "horror" elements. There is shock value to it, sure, but there's only perhaps one scene that uses darkness to build suspense. For the rest of the movie, the "monsters" are pretty much exclusively seen in well-lit areas, even broad daylight. I like it because the horror comes from these characters themselves, not from the mystery of where they might be, or what they might look like. You get a good look at all of them.

The Western's ever-present feeling of inevitability doesn't naturally mesh with modern sensibilities, but Bone Tomahawk circumvents this by adding horror elements that keep the movie unpredictable as well as magnifying the characters' wariness of the untamed frontier. The pacing is largely unhurried, but strong performances, confident scripting & direction, and attention to small details keep the film compelling (and entertaining) up to the disturbing conclusion.

There's a lot of good stuff here; for starters, it's a very rare treat that we get to see a horror western. The director makes a bold move and slows things down considerably after the effective beginning. The cast is also an interesting mix of old and underrated. Still, something doesn't quite click and the film cannot really escape it's low budget origins, and the troglodytes and the gore isn't as menacing as intended. It's interesting that Russell did this almost back-to-back with Hateful 8.

Really successful blend of Western and horror, this film is exceptionally well-written, with fun dialogue coming from this great cast of characters, along with the dramatic dives into extremely gory and brutish violence, makes this film a real treat. Zahler proves his author status with the muscular writing where every word counts, but his command and combination of the two genres seems masterful and certainly had a strong impact on me. Not half as good as at least half of its awesome title, BT will mostly be remembered as an unusual albeit welcome amalgam of two seemingly disparate genres. Zahler must've played a shitload of Undead Nightmare to come up with this shit. Unlike that awesome game, though, BT is disappointingly low on visual panache, painting the Wild West in drab and familiar tones (mostly on hand-held camera) and the macabre elements don't pack nearly as much of a bite as I hoped they would. Save for, you know...

Bone Tomahawk was a bulls-eye. This movie was exceptionally creepy and strange. It was good mix of horror and a wild west movie. Patrick Wilson plays a very determined husband who tries to save his kidnapped wife, played by the beauteous Lili Simmons, from a cannibalistic group of Native Americans. Forget all the other byzantine comparisons: this is Lucky McKee's THE WOMAN run through a make-everything-less-interesting machine. It's also a notably assured and well-crafted debut, and the dialogue funnier and less annoyingly mannered than expected (and the first scene promised). A hint that Zahler knows what he's doing: the "smart" lines go to the "dumb" guy and jar not a bit. It's not too late for certain Irish hacks to take a note or six.

Bone Tomahawk (2015) reminds a little of Slow West (2015) with a more straight narrative and weirder enemies. I'm not a major fan of these modern minimalistic westerns. The quirky quiet atmosphere makes it feel like a made-for-TV movie rather then a artistic approach. Kurt Russell is great though and it has a few awesome moments like the cannibalistic "wishbone" scene with the inspiring "cavalry is coming" speech feeling like a incredible moot point.

What begins as a fairly traditional search-and-rescue Western conceit slowly--perhaps too much so--makes way for horror that errs on the side of the supernatural. Its unique atmosphere of terror and dread in the film's final act is bolstered by utterly palpable violence, each gruelling injury infused with an urgency that makes clear the stakes involved. Most likely could have benefitted from some fat being trimmed; regardless, it remains an impressively grim directorial debut.

Savages abduct some townspeople and a Sheriff and posse go out to rescue them. One of those films that just misses the mark in several ways--e.g., they struggle to find a good ending (not that the ending is terrible). Direction might have been the major issue--both visually (looked like a TV movie) and even with working with the actors. But I suspect the script was good enough that it attracted a solid group of actors. Not a bad fan to watch on a boring Sat. ps70

Patrick Wilson chooses movie scripts with such silly endings. *sigh* The first 1.5 hours I'd give ~4 of 5 stars (it's tense, heartbreaking & also wryly humorous) but thereafter it's more like 2/5 (expecting the schlocky finale, a boozy rewatch with buddies might be fun though). Reminds of Django Unchained in this way, 'cept where Tarantino tacks on a frenetic bloodbath, this shoehorns in some 13th-Warrior-style horror plot that's played way too straight. Better luck next time Mr. Zahler.

Bone Tomahawk is a deliberately paced western horror hybrid that features an impressive cast led by Russell and shocking flashes of raw brutal violence. It is an unromanticised view of the old West that can be tense and unnerving, but the mood is often broken by moments of forced dialogue, questionable framing/blocking, and the cheap looking digital photography, which is too clean to be truly transportive. It's hard to rate this one because Zahler perfectly fused a Western and a Horror movie into one. It's got the quiet contemplative shots with stark landscapes, but it's also got crushed bones, torn flesh, and crazy violence. Hell, it even has Kurt Russell. Taken as a Horror movie, the scares are jumpy and spare, far too spare. As a Western the dialog is stereotypical and plot is overly simplistic. Dialogue really feels artificial like the sort of lip service thing that TV period pieces do where it sort of sounds authentic but you can tell it's some screenwriter's idea of how people used to talk. For all I know it could actually be accurate, but the point is that it didn't convince me and kind of broke the immersion. Very polished and crisp visually and the violence was satisfying. It's basically a drier cowboy version of the 13th Warrior/Hills Have Eyes punctuated with ultraviolence, suffers from some forced sounding dialogue and lack of dread. Surprisingly Matthew Fox was one of the best things about this.

Slightly racist, somewhat cliché, and wildly inaccurate, but well executed. The build up developed the characters well, and the climax was really intense. It also features one of the most gruesome executions I have ever seen in a movie, so there is that.

I'd watch these guys faff around in the wilderness another several hours easily. I also have to note that after six seasons of Lost it's oddly cathartic to see Matthew Fox play a character who's *deliberately* dislikeable.

Excellent cast with some nice characterization and dialogue throughout. Also, great job of subverting horror genre expectations (other than "the black guy dies first") and I really admire the lack of musical score. However, other than some great lighting, I found the coverage and overall aesthetic lacking a thought-out ideology, which makes the whole thing feel like it's in the hands of someone not yet confident in his craft. The gore alone makes this worth watching for horror lovers.

The Proposition meets the 13th Warrior. Simple premise, but gorgeously, viscerally executed. Bits of off-beat humor ensure that the 2 hour journey doesn't feel like a slog, while the strong performances keep the viewer firmly suspended in disbelief. All-in-all a well-rounded movie that is worth a watch if you have any interest in neo-Westerns.

Great performances from Jenkins and Russell, and some gruesome, visceral shocks are the most memorable parts of the film. It takes a while to build-up; that doesn't bother me, but I was expecting a bigger pay-off.

Exceptionally well-written characters elevate BONE TOMAHAWK, a film that combines a familiar western plot with the atmosphere of a modern horror-thriller. Any one of the main ensemble could sustain a movie of his own; together, they comprise a psychological portrait of closing of the American frontier--and what that process cost the people most responsible for it. Conspicuously absent: the Native American perspective, though that's one of the ways the film follows a traditional western paradigm.
