Like LtROI this Lindqvist adaptation uses fantasy as a dark reflection of social problems & abandonment. Some intimate moments with an intruguing blend of tenderness, danger & even absurd comedy but mostly the drama left me weirdly cold. Maybe the fantasy felt odd without the context of adolescence or maybe the characters weren't quite fully-fledged. It's obvious this was a short story & felt underdeveloped even if they stayed admirably true to its ethos. Some inappropriate hilarity for Finns.

You could say it's a quality film. You could also say it's pretty insufferable. The premise is interesting, and the investigation plot has real legs. Unfortunately those legs are kicked right out from under it, the film instead spends about 90% of its time exploring an absurd and not at all interesting relationship - I see the point, but there's zero heart to it. Absolutely no investment.

Grotesque and unsettling in a way that reminds one of classic body-horror like The Fly, but with a very prim, proper and restrained level of nuance that only Nordic directors seem to maintain. A very cool, heady modern fairy tale and while it's not exactly a pleasant watch, I'd recommend it. It says a lot about identity, xenophobia, nationalism, isolationism, vanity--a whole litany of acutely relevant real-world issues.

I liked the way it treats its "weird" characters. Instead of fetishizing their difference and making an unintended freak show --which is done by most of the "identity politics movies"-- out of them, Abbasi narrates a story of personal discovery, love, and loss. The distanced yet embracing and humanist gaze he offers enables the film to expose the viewer to the reality of these "different" beings, becoming an intervention into our senses and redefining what is normal, acceptable, or political.

A movie that a much less subtle filmmaker, like Guillermo Del Toro, would have botched, and thank Jehovah it didn't turn out that way. Although I fear that somewhere down the line he will try to snatch it up and regurgitate it in his tacky aesthetic. But I really like this movie for how many different styles and genres it goes back and forth to while remaining cohesive and compelling. The performances and setting add greatly as well to pulling you into a mysterious and yet banal world.

It's when it becomes a proper fairy tale, twisted and macabre, that the film finds its feet and pulls you in, and it's a shame this only happens two-thirds of the way into the story. Until then, the slow, meandering pace and lack of soundtrack is just uncomfortable, and much of the substance before the monstrous twist seems unnecessary.

"It's a small story," a colleague told me. And in a way, it actually is an intimate and slow moving movie. But try re-telling the plot to someone and you'll sound absolutely bonkers. It has all the trademarks of an Ajvide Lindquist story, but doesn't reach the lofty heights of "Let The Right One In"

I see identity politics as belonging primarily to the narcissistic unreality of the super consumer, and 'Gräns' did an excellent job of uncovering how fitting in to any world will always come with strings attached.

"Border" is a story that's stuck with me for over 10 years, so I had some trepidation about seeing it on screen. But Abbasi's adaptation is beautiful, even if you know (or can spot a mile away) the twist. The sort of story that Hollywood would offer a simple resolution to, but remains low-key kitchen sink realistic. The obviousness of the twist almost becomes a strength; it's obvious the world is a mess, we just don't want to see it or have to take responsibility.

Top badass moment? The beautiful fox’s tail; it’s just so… big and fluffy. (And for possibly the most half-arsed video on YouTube, check out “Why Foxes Have Bushy Tails – Red Fox Facts and Information”.) With it's stunning make-up and contender for the weirdest sex scene ever, this really is a pretty unique movie that it’s impossible to write much about without giving anything away. So I’ll just say this: eating maggots. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

gräns is quite hard to swallow, mostly because of the grim issues it touches, but also because of its visual language, and the way Abbasi reveals the plot. an interesting story and an original premise is somewhat wasted on a sub-par ending. weird and disturbing in multiple levels, gräns is definetely not for everyone.

A delightful mix of social realism, magical and mythological elements. Like "Let the Right one In" The Border sees fantastic elements rooted in normal, everyday life and social problems (like racism, bullying, segregation) as the real horror. The film went down a storm with local Helsinki audience laughing and crying "wtf" at unexpected scenes in equal measure.

A methodically paced fantasy-thriller-romance (?) that knows exactly what its doing. The B-plot procedural seems like less love is given to it, until it doesn't. There isn't really anything else like this and it thrives in its weirdness.

The great thing about this movie is how it's about an outcast with an interesting trait, until it's not and it takes a deep and daring dive into nordic folklore-fantasy but still holds the narrative and characters together. Guillermo Del Toro will probably buy and misunderstand this story and tack it up Hollywood-style real hard. Be in before him and watch this fascinating, beautifully acted oddball.

Refreshingly original film with an unique atmosphere and strong performances from Melander & Milonoff. It utilizes the Swedish nature beautifully and perhaps displays a different side than what foreigners have been used to. The script feels a bit rushed though; some things are left too vague while others (like the police investigation) feel forced. As a whole, it still feels very fresh and is definitely worth a watch for viewers looking for something different.

Features ogres who can sniff out contraband falling in love, but just because the physicality of this couple is different for a romance film doesn't mean the rest is. Despite a genuinely shocking and unique sex scene, there's little else to praise about this surprisingly pedestrian and unadventurous romance tale.

Novel spin on 'outsider' tropes covers similar ground to THE SHAPE OF WATER, though Abbasi's morbid fixation (even fetishisation) on the deliberately and hideously repellent for the first half makes this tough going; once the relationship between Melander and Milonoff stabilises(?), it becomes a haunting and quite powerful humanistic story, though the underdeveloped and extraneous sex crime subplot throws the movie off kilter at several key junctures. Certainly a unique and memorable experience.

Border (originally Gräns) was very strong story running film with powerful acting. I liked the realistic feet on a ground output. This flick belongs to same league with the unique, logic of their own Swedish fantasy stories. One of the writers was John Ajvide Lindqvist who wrote Let the Right One In (2008).
