Bette Davis again being a erratic lady because she wants tough "Mexican-American" Paul Muni. Can't complain about the casting as both actors got Oscar nominations that year, but for different films. They are good here too, but the film is lacking. This feels more like a programmer level production even if they give us top-notch actors. But it does have this sweet racial related moment when Margaret Lindsay rejects his marriage proposal; "Because you belong to a different tribe, savage!"

"Bordertown" doesn't age well. It has Hispanics with 'gringo' accents and a racist ending that says stay where you belong. On the plus side, you get to watch Betty Davis act crazy.

At the time, Paul Muni was Warner's biggest star...judging from this, it's almost inexplicable--he's all swagger, and his over-acting is egregious. The first half hour is ultra-sappy backstory that is utterly embarrassing to watch. Fortunately, things improve when the action shifts to south of the border and Bette Davis (and Eugene Pallette!) shows up. Her descent into madness is great fun to watch.
