A British ship is sunk after an engagement with a German vessel, and the survivors are picked up by the German ship, which has been damaged. When it pulls into the bay of a deserted island to make repairs, one of the British survivors, Seaman Brown, steals a rifle and escapes from the ship, his plan being to try picking off the crew from various spots on the island and delay the ship's repairs long enough for a British vessel to arrive and give battle. Middling military propaganda exercise is interesting enough as a historical document, but choppy cutting (in the 68m. version) means that the establishing domestic scenes with Balfour feel overly detailed and needlessly complicated once the bulk of the movie is given over to Mills' heroic efforts on the battlefield. Still a noble if unexceptional effort, with Mills revealing flashes of the iconic star that he would become in a fine performance.

Choppy war drama at sea. Shows signs quality, but the choice of editing eliminates the full story to come to life. Especially when the battles are about to begin.... a little out of nowhere and concludes a little underwritten. The film does delivers it's message of war pride and sacrifice. An feeling that needed awakening in the mid-30s as Germany was showing their muscles.
